Default So.Cal owners - Fiberglass trunk

With the help of a audiopholic friend, my setup is finally up and running. The current setup is crafted in light-weight MDF, and lacks the robustness of a fiberglass setup. Rattling at high volumes is the preliminary reason for my exploration into fiberglass work.

so....a few questions for the veterans out there.

- What is the price range that I can expect to pay?
- Any recommended shops around the SGV?
- Any brave souls that can do it out of their garage?

TIA

I had some custom fiberglass work done for my old car. I had to sub boxes molded into the corners, and made the spare tire well an amp rack. I think the fiberglass work cost about $500-$600.

A little hard to tell how it looks, but if you look closely you can see the two subs on each side of the tire well.

wait a second, MDF, if you use the right thickness, is MUCH better in terms of stiffness and rattling prone than your average fiberglass install.

infact, to get fiberglass to not bend, and buzz, and leak air, you really really need to take your time and do a ALOT of layers and do everything properly..

i am surprised you are having issues with rattling, buzzing and what not with MDF...:O you ARE using at least 3/4" thickness on loadbearing panels right? what does your set up consist of?

as for answering your questions, what kind of set up are you looking to do?

that is true...but also remember that even a crappy fiberglass box thats a bit too thin takes a bit more time than building a sqaure wooden box...and i have seen way too many fiberglass intsalls that cost a done and still leaks and buzzes like crazy

A solid MDF box will likely have less weight and be less prone to rattling than fiberglass installations ... not sure you are going in the right direction here....

what thickness MDF did you use?
