Default Good Place to Mount an Ipod Once Connected to Head Unit

just curious as to the experiences of people on the board. I'm installing my Clarion head unit and i was wondering where a good place to mount the ipod is so that it's concealed but easily reachable incase i need to pull it out and use it outside of the car is? It will be connected to the deck for the most part, but hopefully most of you have already experienced this and have some useful imput. Also, is there any brackets made that hold the ipod or is it all custom done stuff? Thanks!

I ran the ipod connection cable into my armrest cubby. I just dremeled (sp?) the front part of the cubby out big enough to squeeze the connector through and unless you have flashlight and look at a weird angle, you can't even see the hole.

ill post a pic when I find them.

There is a panavise clip that will go into your r side vent and attach the ipod holder by pro fit. I have mine mounted this way in my QX4

Thats what I have done. Its much easier to see whats playing, unless your HU shows this already. Also, you can find songs easier ect. If you want it hidden, just run it under teh shifter center console to the rear drink holder and hide it in there.

I've got mine mounted vertically in my Nav cubby. REALLY tough to get in there, and had to Dremel out an access hole in the bottom for the mount, but it looks good. Gotta get pics one of these days...

Default Another take on iPod mounting...

I'd love to see pics of the vertical mounting in the Nav Cubby...

I just ordered my ipod interface today actually, so it should be here by week's end. My original plan was to make a custom iPod dock for the nav cubby. My background is in industrial design and prototyping so this sort of thing is right up my alley.

However, today I realized something VERY interesting (to me anyway.) I have a 2004 Z, so obviously the older console. The 2003-2005 console ashtray is essentially the EXACT size of the current generation 30GB and larger iPod.

My plan is to get an extra ashtray from my dealer and modify it such that the lid to the ashtray will actually be the iPod. I will have to do some custom work to fit the dock connector and make it look clean and of "factory quality."

Pictures will follow when I begin work on this. I'm excited as this is my first truly custom "mod". The car is stock currently with just window tint. (my goal was an exact replica of the Chrome Silver Z in the initial Z advertising)

What do you guys think of the idea??

That a good idea...one that I wanted to do. However, I think you're going to have a problem with the "charging" interface...just too big and bulky. I originally wanted mine in the ashtray because of the fit, but 1. you can't see it and 2. it's easy for everyone else (thieves) to see it. At least in the Nav cubby you can shut the door. Just a thought.
