I have just installed a JL Audio 10w3v2-D4 sub in the standard
sub enclosure behind the driver seat. The thing is riddled
with holes and is therefore acting like a free air sub. It sounds
pretty good, but I think sealed would be better or maybe ported.
After looking at the instructions, sealed needed 0.7 ft3 and
ported 1.48 ft3. Since the cavity is about 1.5, I was thinking that
ported would be the way to go. I could seal the sides pretty
easily and based on the instructions, a 3" pvc pipe 24.375" long
would work for the port.

Does this sound reasonable? Does the port need to point
directly into the interior or could it exit into the passenger
side enclosure? Other than the head unit, I want the install
to be as stealth as possible.

I took min eout as well and tried to think of a way to close the cavity in. You think some dynamat glued in to close the openings would do or does it need a box built inside?

Anyone comment?

just dynomat it won't sound good... you have to build a box for it.

not sure if you will like the bass there, but I think the best place is to build a box in the hatch area. If you are going to build one anyway, might as well do it right..

Ported enclosure is not a good idea especially when you don't have an idea dimension to work with. the port needs to be tuned with correct length and placement. most port enclusures are recomended as retangular shape. you need to have some experience in subwoofer design in order to make a correct ported system. There are pros /cons with ported system, make sure you know what you doing.

I stick to sealed enclosure. my .02
