the type r is 500watts rms while the w3 is only 300watts rms, but some say that jl is still hits harder. I might power either sub with an alpine 650 amp.

Had a JL 10w3v2 and if there is one thing JL is known for...it's under stating power. Had a really bad experience though with an Alpine 1000w amp in my previous car. Had to send it back 5 times.

out of thsoe two, having installed many of both, i would say i prefer the jl cause its more efficient, and is easier to install, the alpine is kinda large lol...
in terms of sound, i honestly think both are fine...your average decent sounding SQL subs...
there are other subs that IMO can get louder, or sound better, or perhaps both, for similar prices... but if those are your choices go for the JL IMO

Out of those two that you are inquiring about, I would go with the JL sub.
What's your goal? You can get a Diamond D610, 500watts rms, better sq than either of those 2 subs you mention and it gets ~loud~.

honestly, i think both are decent in SQ...
they both have decent transients, low freq extension, impact, and tonality...on a scale of 1 to 10 on sq, i would say both are in the 6.5 range...but also keep in mind i dotn think amny subs get near 10 on the scale at all
