you can bypass any unit.

i'd personally rather get the Pioneer AVIC D3 for around the same price, if not cheaper.

5500 is old... Personally I have the 6600... I love it... You might want to consider the AVN 5510 or the AVN 6610...

00 VS 10:
00 have a 6.5 inch screen, 10 series have a 7.0 inch screen
00 no bluetooth or "nav traffic", 10 yes and yes in retrospec
00 you may encounter some problems with ipod integration (5500), 10 have no problem with this... You will have full function of the ipod via the touch screen... Also, you will only have access to audio, you can NOT play video

55XX VS 66XX
66XX have dual DVD slots (you can have a dvd and the nav disc at the same time...
55XX have single DVD slots (if you want to watch a DVD you need take the nav disc out

Well, I hope that helps...

aside whats been said, my two bits are: (though keep in mind that i am NOT a fan of eclipse, hasnt been for about 7 years, and prolly never will be)

the good:

decent sq, decent graphics, good picture quality...overall a good headunit

the bad:

*** backwards user interface, nothign is as common sense laid out as say a pioneer, the nav features and views arent as good as the pioneers, too many wires coming out the back making installation more difficult, and on some of them, including the 5500,t he subwoofer control is useless, you have to go through four pushes of buttons to get to it, and then it only goes from zero to FOUR! thats it, four steps...wtf?

overlal, for a nav unit, if nav is the focus, i would take pioneer, alpine and prolly kenwood before the eclipse units

my main focus is the multimedia functions. this head unit has 2 slots one for cd's and one for dvd's. but now im thinking i mite get the 6610 insted of the 5500 because it has two dvd slots. hey brick have you had any problems with the eclipse headunits? will they last for a long time?
