AVIC D3 install with 7" cubby hole screen/reverse cam
Ordered the D3 from crutchfield for $999 along with the free reverse camera, and the screen from Buy.com. Not an overly complex install but time consuming for me at least, finding a way to route the wires and whatnot, not to mention finding a way to get the center console back on with 27 miles of wire behind it. The screen I bought didnt have the slim metal backing that some of you guys have, so i couldnt put any screws back in behind it, but it did fit very snug and I threw some duct tape on for insurance. Hey it worked when I was a helicopter mechanic. I also performed the bypass which was pretty easy. The GPS puck is installed under the A/C fan and temp controls and it gets an OK signal according to the head unit. Pretty happy overall, it looks good and sounds good, I still have to figure out what everything does. Havent had a chance to use the navigation feature yet. This was done on an 03 Touring w/Bose. Here are a few pictures.
Heres a picture of the Pioneer rear view cam, smaller than I thought but i wish it were a little smaller.
I routed the rear view cam wire through the grommet near the spare tire, then around the driver side window/door panel, under the steering column area, then to the center console. A wire clothes hanger was my best friend. The camera isnt actually bolted to the mount plate that came with it, I have it angled in so that the pressure of the bumper and the backing of the plate keep it tight and keep it from moving. I would have drilled 2 holes in the plate in different locations but my bits were total crap. Thanks to my350z.com for all the info before I started. I started about 330 pm when the delivery dude showed up, and finished around 10pm, thats with mountain dew/canned tuna breaks, and the occasional "WTF is this supposed to do/wire/mount" problems, and internet breaks to double check things.
