Don't think you can really break it down that easily. I'm not audio expert, but some subs are "the best" at simply pounding, while others are "the best" at sound quality...while still others are "the best" fitting in certain setups. Ask yourself what you're looking for in a sub; SPL, SQ or something else? If you can answer that, then someone with way more audio knowledge than me can probably point you in right direction

And even the best to me may not be the best to you. You said "for sound quality", so I will say that is what you are looking for. Most very high end SQ subwoofer drivers don't handle gobs of power and don't get terribly loud.

Everything SiNzz said plus what are you realistically looking to spend? Are we talking bottomless budget here?

Two of my picks for top of the line SQ would include, but not limited to:
Peerless XXLS driver

TC Sounds LMS-5400

Of course someone will get mad if I don't mention
Image Dynamics IDQ

Don't forget the Seas Lotus - Great SQ, nice price and just simply warm and smooth... like sweet apple pie...

right on, there is no best, cuase everyone hsa their taste, some prefer tonality, some prefer impact, some want ultra low freq extension above all, and some want transient, and of course, some want it all, but there are very few subs that does all those things perfectly...

not to mention the install, the tuning has a great deal to do with the outcome...

from what i have heard in person...and in my own opinion only...

some relaly good SQ subs: DLS Iridium, Velodyne, Pioneer premier PRS, image dynamics IDW...and quite a few others i cant think of...most of thes are expensive and/or hard to come by...

if there is a sub that is my fav interms of cost/sq ratio, its probably the image dynamics IDQ, small box requirement, great low freq, fast, tonally good and just overall a very nice sounidng sub...

if someone had the money and want a great SQL sub, the IDMAX line is also one of my favorite but its quite a bit more cash

well, i like JL or Rockford subs and kickers. It depends what kind of size, how many, and how loud you want it. I would try to get those subs that you really cant pick up and best buy and other stores. Trying checking out a JL W7 of Rockford T2 subs. Also, dont forget that the box and location gives you a different sound as well.

Sorry if thats not help

TC Sounds started out as the build house for MANY high end botique sub brands, and they still make drivers for other brands, but decided that they want to sell at retail prices too. They are very high quality in all aspects and very highly regarded in the car audio industry. Best break out the AmEx if you are looking at these subs.

I haven a 10" Alpine Type-R and I think the ROckford Punch equivalents sound better. Mine is good but at least at Best Buy I think the Punch's hit harder.

JL Audio 15W6 first generation! Had 2 15s in my 300ZX and had by far the loudest stereo in my town, can be heard at least 1/4 mile away. Used to make other cars's rearview mirrors fall angled from my bass vibrating.

-Oh yeah and my hearing just aint what it used to be, but that was the one of the top of the line subs back in 2000

TC sound is used in alot of high end home audio. I believe they were not available to the general public a few years ago.

I built a home sub with Adire Audio Brahma
