I have a 2003 z that came with bose system that has a sub. well it keeps cutting off and I wanted to replace it with a new sub.
my question is, why do people charge extra to install when they see it's a bose system?
my other question is has anyone here replaced it with another sub before? my freind says you cant since its a free air sub or somthing along those line and that the new sub must be enclosed?
the people that have changed it, what did you change it with, what type of sub?

I just had the sub replaced in the 07 Roadster and I brought it to my local shop and built a box to sit directly in where the Bose sub went. I went with a 10" Treo SSi and Rockford amp. They did such a nice job of installing it that the only way you can tell I have done anything to the sound is from my Eclipse AVN6610. They even used the stock cover with the "Bose" on it to mask the sub.

The Bose subwoofer is a "free air" subwoofer and due to their inaccuracy and lack of efficiency they're really hard to find in the after market who concentrate on sealed, ported, or isobaric - all loads more accurate and more efficient than free air.
Infinity also makes a sealed box-o-amplifier subwoofer that many here have used with success in the hole behind the driver's seat. The stock Bose amplifier and subwoofer are removed and the whole Infinity kit fits in the hole. I haven't heard one but others here have been pleased with them.
Most of the people who have the subwoofer cut-out have found a loose connection. You have to tear the plastic apart in the forward part of the trunk to get to both the amplifier and the subwoofer. You remove the steel plate mounted with 10 mm bolts to open the hole up and get to the three connections: the input to the amp, the output from the amp to the speaker, and the input to the speaker.
