Default Long install day, here's what it came down to...... Damn.

Well I've had a long day. First had to go get my tint fixed. Then I decided to go into my dash and put my head unit in. That took a little while, but finally got it done (dont buy the Metra kit. POS.). I've had a problem with my stereo since I got it. Only one speaker works.... So I went out and bought some speakers. I got some infinity reference 6022i for freakin 20 bucks. I couldn't pass that up. So I take out the old speakers, hammer out all the stuff in the middle (who needs a dremel???) and proceed to mount my new speakers to the old brackets. All is perfect. I put it in, it works, sounds fairly nice (better than no speaker) and doesn't interfere with the window. THEN I put the freakin door panel on. I popped the cover off because I plan on doing the speaker grill mod, so I just took it out already. Here's what I saw when I put the door panel back on.....

I'm guessing now I'm gonna have to get a dremel, and cut about half an inch off of the bracket? I'm sure that would do it, but just incase anybody else here has run into it before...

What problem(s) did you have with the Metra kit?

...Is that what the thread is about?

The problem is the speaker hitting the door panel. The metra kit doesnt fit very well for me. Lots of gaps. I'll shoot a picture later and post it. The main problem is the speakers though, i gotta cut the bracket down a little bit i guess.

I am curious what year is your z? There is a different kit for 03-05 and 06-up. Either one would cause issues on the other car.

Did you pick up the kit local? If so I would guess your z is an 06 or up cause the 03-05 kits are what most people carry in their shops.

If I am way off, my bad. But I have used many metra kits and have not known them to fit poorly. Warp on the other hand, yeah they can do that in the heat, but once they reconform, usually they fit ok.

99-7402 for 03-05 z's
99-7602 for 06-up z's

I ordered the kit from crutchfield, couldnt find a local kit anywhere. I have an 03. I toyed around with it and it ended up not looking too bad.

I dremeled the stock speaker bracket down a little bit, and now the speaker fits fine. I haven't done the passenger door yet, and not looking forward to it either...

dude i had the same problem. i was pissed. i lived with it for a while, and just messed with the eq so that the door speakers had no excursion or deep bass.

face it, for a serious speaker, your better off getting door pods. thats what i did and you cant go wrong.
