Couldn't I just tell you that I have a single 10" Diamond D6 rear-firing in a XtremeKustoms under strut box?

I don't have a 350Z and all my comments are based on SQ -never was into SPL don't see the point...
Here's some of my G35 Coupe setup (which has been changed now but don't have any pics handy of the new light weight setup) - some sanctioning bodies require SPL as part of SQ scoring - this setup consistently managed 148db on the Audio Control filtered mic on the dash with enclosures designed for SQ... And before anyone points out the obvious, YES this car has rear mounted subs and does have some minor rear localization issues... I never intended for this car to be a serious comp car, but it still racked up several wins in the Expert Street Class while I was working on my purpose built competition car...

i do like JBL crown 6000's
your car is trunk not hatch
your 148 on the ac would be higher if it was hatch
nice set up
i like sql
i like to hear music all day and still hit mid 155's on the ac and mid 145's on the TL
TL scores are 5-10 lower than ac scores
your 148 is more like 140 on the the tl
but still respectable
i just went from a 5000 watt amp to a 10,000 watt amp so i should pick up 2-3 more db to be high 145's on tl and high 155's on ac
but i use 1 each 12" sub to do it

Thanks.
Wish I could take credit for the idea. I have Kwame to thank for the sub design (be sure to check out his build thread. Mac electronics, Seas subs, seriously nice install) and Dom (Mr X) to thank for everything else including the design and build of the floating amp rack and molded in subs.
It's all about one's goals for a system. Whether someone likes SPL, SQ or any combination, as long as it works for them, that's what matters.

Personally I don't think there's a dime's difference once you fire up the 80 dB 300 pony noise maker mounted between the front wheels. Once Mr. VQ starts running the nuances in the "sound stage" and "sound quality" all become covered up. Driving around town I enjoy the sound from my stereo system but it's not a home stereo set up for goodness sake and arguing about a dB or two here or there ain't gonna matter. Outside of competition where there's a calibrated meter making objective measurements the difference doesn't matter - you ought to not be doing critical music judgments four feet from a 300 horsepower engine.
This is now a world where people enjoy 96 Kb/sec MP3's through tiny little ear buds in a crowded room. Connecting my Senheisers up to my iPod's makes some difference as does bumping the ripping up to 320 Kb/sec. But compression is compression, and listening in a car is listening in a car!

You do understand that at sound pressure levels above say, 125 dB that you're causing permanent irreversible damage to your hearing correct? Hopefully you're simply making all that noise to make noise and not to listen to it - ever. Even one serious exposure can lead to a lifetime of Tinnitus ... ask me how much fun that is. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I don't recommend looking into the sun ... and certainly not with a telescope. Nor would I expose what's left of my hearing to such abuse.
I'll get off my soapbox now. Understand what you're doing or I'll hit you with my cane.

This is really a good thread containing some useful and good advice. I notice that the thread receives information from some of the more knowledgeable Forum members. I would respectfully (since I am in the company of people who know what they are talking about) offer some additional comments, mostly directed to this post:
I think a lot of people planning an installation are thinking “Home Entertainment System.” By that I mean the 5.1 “home entertainment system mentality/concept” is creeping into car installations where it probably isn’t the best way to present sound, at least not to the driver and front seat passenger. That is especially true in a small compartment as is the 350 Z or G 35/37 coupe.
Of course if you have a large SUV, you might want to do this (5.1 surround sound), but in this case the visual (LCDs) would be inside the front seat headrests facing the rear passengers, the front would actually be speakers in the rear passenger doors, and the rears would be in the rear cargo space. The SubW would be wherever it worked best for non-directional sound. I’ve seen this type of installation, but can only think about how annoying this would be for the driver and the front seat passenger. Of course this setup begs for headphones that rear seat passengers use for their enjoyment without disturbing the driver and the front seat passenger.
My Point: As Philthy states; when planning your installation, you should stage the system so that the sounds comes from the front of your car. This provides the most pleasing and realistic sound.
