Default Door panel sub-panel removal question (for dynamat install)

I've been searching for the last week and haven't found an example of this.

Has anyone removed the black sub-panel behind the door panel for the purpose of installing dynamat or a similar product on the outer door sheet metal? If so is there a how-to out there or pictures?

I am considering doing this as I'm reinstalling my front component speakers soon (warranty replacement for a blown woofer).

Is it even worth it to attempt this or should I just reach through the speaker hole and install what I can through that.

I am going to use either dynamat xtreme, or second skin damplifier/overkill.

you could probably just unbolt it and pry it off...it looks to be siliconed on there...then just reseal when your done. thats what i think. if u want to dynamat i think the best way to do it right would be to get behind that piece...it would also make it much easier.

I was looking through the service manual... It seems the power window motors and the window-holding brackets are connected to this panel. I guess I don't want to mess with that stuff just to get some dynamat in. I will probably just install what I can behind the speaker and then cover the whole outer panel.

yea u can...its been a while but i think when i did my doors i just covered over that piece and the rest of it too. sure the best way to do it is right to the inside of the door skin but its probably just as good this way too.

Just a heads up,,,if you are installing the mat over the middle door skin,,,dont forget to notch out around the bolts holding the window motor. Our 350z window motors are notorious for going bad. It would be difficult to locate and remove the panel and inside window motor if everything is covered up. And, you do not want the job of removing the mat to change the motor,,,then having to re-mat. Trust me!! just my 2 cents.

Should I also make it a separate sheet on that panel in general? ie, if you replace the window motor does that whole panel need to come out to get the motor out?

and thanks for the heads up!

zmansoon,,,from what I understand,,you have to remove the middle (inside panel to replace the window motor. When I did my Rammatt,,,I just cut it in smaller pieces that would fit around the panel. that way,,no bolts were covered up and would not be difficult to replace the window motor,. I matted both of my doors as I described and it made a huge difference in sound quality and road noise..

Just to clarify, if I go to the trouble of not covering up the bolts, I should also make sure there are no dynamat pieces covering the seam of the black panel:

Thats what I did,,,,I made sure not to cover any seems nor bolts. I am sure other people here will have other opinions and such,,,,but I didnt want to take a chance of the window motor going out,,,then having to pull away/off the matt, finding which bolts to expose to take off,,,,then having to put it all back together, then matt again. Again, this was the way I did it.
