assuming you do not need a navi or tv headunit, 2k is very doable...i have done quite a few system in the psat for customers in the 2k range for equipment...

here is an example:

1. mid line headunit from the major manufactuers, soething wtih a good 4 volt ouput: $350

2. front stage: DLS MS6A 6.5" two way comp in kicks: $550

3. amp: DLS RA50 5 channel, front four channels will run the kicks fully active with 75 watts each driver, and send about 400 real world watts to the subs : $750

4. 2x image dynamics ID10 subs, very musical, good output and very efficient so matches well wiht the ra50's sub stage: $250

5. zenenclsoure dual 10 box: $150

done...sounds quite niec overall

i can't argue with this man right here.. he knows his ****.. the only thing i might have different is the front components.. I have no experience with DLS so i couldnt' recommend it.. i would have said Diamond Audio D661s $199

now on the headunit.. if you are looking for CD/DVD/NAV you might have to pick an older model.. not that there is anything wrong with that.. they still perform just as great.. they just have don't have the new features

if you order a set of components.. you get two speakers, two tweeters and two crossovers..

if you order a subwoofer you are only getting 1.

the cost of install will vary.. so you have to check with your local shops

I agree with the Diamond Audio comment. And you could also shave a little cash off the amplifier selection by getting a dedicated amp for your highs and another for your subs (-vs-5 Channel), while getting more power output with comparable sound Q.
