But I don't get it - is this DVD based or Kenwood's Flash ROM?

 

5120 uses the Garmin navigation, Just like the 7100 and the 8120. It is hard drive based and built in to the unit.

Release date is suposed to be February, Propably late febr,. early March.... I am Kenwod's Lier...

Kenwood doesn’t use a hard disk drive for navigation. Instead Kenwood devices have a solid state navigation structure that uses “flash” memory.

I thought I should mention this because Kenwood flashdrive-based navigation is faster and more reliable that HDD-based navigation devices. That is a significant advantage that Kenwood offers over competing units. In addition to the performance and reliability advantages, this structure allows Kenwood to provide instant Internet updates for application software and map updates using an SD card.

I'll try to see one on showcase before purchase day, wondering if the screen is too small. But in the long run, the price, updates, speed, reliability should make this a very practical choice.

Dumb Q: But with this unit, do the cars lose their 6 disc changers?

 

if you have bose 6 speed cd changer, this unit will replace your stock bose hu, so yes, you will lose the disc changer.
But you get dvd playback capability which is as much as 6 cd's on top of ipod and usb mass storage connectivities. I don't think you will miss your disc changers all that much.

For my interest, I can't wait to see the nav screen output.

 

Navigation screen will look the same as current Kenwood devices.

you can burn your mp3 files on a dvd which gives you over 4gb whereas 6 cd's about the same. If you listen to cd's a lot, you can always add a cd changer which doesn't cost you much now days

 

So, if I add 702 screen in the upper cubby, do i get to keep the touchscreen function too?

just saw the unit at local BestBuy for 599.99 or 699.99. im pretty sure it was 699.99... (this is the unit without navigation). $599 is one HELL of a deal

the specs are up on the website now.. there are a few things that irritated me..
mostly the low voltage outputs... Also only two Audio outs, appears you can only do front/rear or front/sub. No HD radio either...
Also no mention in the manual of being able to send the NAV screen to another monitor.

 

Huh? Looking at the Kenwood DNX5120 it appears to be a full-featured device with an attractive price. It has USB connection, iPod support, great navigation, crystal-clear RGB screen display on its LCD monitor, A/V output and input ports, satellite radio connection, HD radio connection, BlueTooth, and more.

What is the problem you mention with the low voltage outputs (could you elaborate on this/your point)?

For the pre-outs, you could go front to a 4 channel amp to handle front and rear (if in fact you wanted rears at all), and use the rear pre-out to another amp to control your SubW. Or, you can configure the pre-outs differently and in other configurations if you want.

The Kenwood DNX5120 is HD radio ready. You add a HD tuner to get this feature.

I’m not sure it can output navigation to a remote monitor. But, you should be aware that this feature is lacking in any competitive product.

Its a great deck, and I am 90% its the one I will be purchasing (already have the other parts to the stereo, just waiting on the deck now)...
That being said, the 5120 has 2V preouts.
I'm just saying.... even cheap-o decks now a days seem to hav 4V+ preouts. From a design standpoint its a costless (pennies if anything) feature for the manufacturer, and it annoys me a little that they leave things like that out to enhance the feature set of more expensive units.

 

^^ But, does that make any difference in the final result?

I’m ignorant on this point, but thought it was the amp and proper matching/configuration that provides optimum sound.
