Default Whats with XM sound quality?

I just hooked up the Audiovox xpress XM receiver to my panasonic HU with the antenna adapter and the sound quality isnt " digital" like they claim. When ever I listen to talk radio or when im switching station I hear this static/buzz sound in the backround. Sounds more like FM radio if not worse sigh. Any way to fix this?

What about music stations? Many of the talk stations don't pay the premium $$$ for high quality bandwidth or whatever. So they typically don't sound as great. The music stations should be fine though.

If by "antenna adapter" you're referring to an FM modulator that goes inline with your HU's radio antenna cable, then I hate to break it to you but...

...it IS "FM Radio" quality, at best. You're injecting an FM radio signal, which is subject to all the same interference as a "normal" radio signal, into your HU's radio input (the antenna cable). Is there a way to fix that problem? Yes. Unfortunately it involves getting a headunit that either has XM built in or will accept direct digital input and control an external XM receiver.

FM Modulators are, at their VERY best, a poor way to get a signal into your headunit. Good luck.

By the way, just as an aside, don't confuse the XM radio marketing department's description of "Digital Quality" with CD Quality. True, it's a digital signal so as long as you can receive it, it should be clean. But the audio signal is compressed before it's broadcast so it will not be true CD quality.

That said, *most* people find XM perfectly listenable in the car. I do. Your problem, if your setup is configured as I inferred from your post, is that you're converting XM's digital signal to a plain ol' analog FM radio signal and, broadcasting it with a weak transmitter, at that.

Hello hiss, static, buzz.

ah yes, i am using a fm modulator atm. ugggg..... I just ordered this HU http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...-XG700&tp=5684 . What will need to to hook it up properly? Also is my XM service transferable to the new device without needing to pay more activation fees?
