Default Weight conscious system?

Anyone have experience with a light-weight install? BLOSE makes the weight target, but doesn't come close to the sound target.

I want audible bass down to 25 Hz or so and decent sound, but don't want to add 250lbs to my z. The freakin 10w7 weighs 30lbs on its own and the 8w7 weighs 17 lbs

Has anyone done a weight-conscious stereo? Conflicting hobbies sucks! Nice stereo = more weight. more weight = slower z

What to do?

You know you want to try one of these:
http://www.tymphany.com/lat70006001-04
(Sealed box of 2.2 cubic feet for an F3 of 37Hz. (+6dB cabin gain car response down to 15Hz))

Get creative with sound damping in the hatch and use spray foam wherever you can. Spray foam is not quite as effective as damping mat, but it will get the job done and very light as far as weight is concerned. Use damping mat sparingly in the hatch. If you use kicks you won't need to deaden doors as heavily. Choose one 3 or 5 channel amp. 3-channel if you are using a component set and a sub, 5-channel if you are going to go with an active front stage. I know Bing has a DLS amp that he really likes to use to power an entire system. The model escapes me right now. I had a Crossfire VR705D 5-channel in my Xterra and loved it. I think the IDQv.3 sub will weigh less than a JL w7 and I feel you will be happy with its output. Build or have built a custom fiberglass enclosure instead of a MDF enclosure.

HAhah - yeah, you know I want to try that. But... a 2.2 Cu Ft enclosure is gonna be huge and heavy, regardless of what it's made of. I would not mind trying the on that you got (you got the smaller one, right?). How's the 40Hz and below on that one? you say it's 3db down at 37 Hz? And we can assume a 6db/octave roll-off below 37Hz. THen, add the 6DB cabin gain.... Definitely in SQ territory. I like to flip switches to go from SQ to blur-your-vision! I have a split personality like that...

I forgot all about the weight of damping too...

I still have a chrome Precision Power PC-4800 from 1999 or 2000 that I LOVE. But it is almost two feet long so not sure where I'd put it. Such a clean sounding amp! It is also HEAVY! Probably 18 lbs on its own! But, it has a true tripple-darlington output transistor configuration, which a lot of newer amps just don't have. This configuration does not limit current and allows the amp to double it's 4-ohm capacity into two ohms. It really has incredible dynamic range. It does 100WRMS x 4 into 4 ohms or 200WRMS x 4 into two ohms. The rear channels can be bridged for 400WRMS into a 4-ohm mono load (Amp sees half the speaker impedance in bridged mode).

I'll just do two front speakers and a sub. not sure if I'll go two-way or three-way in the front. I loved my Eton-made diamond-audio speakers that I had in the Bimmer, but I sold them with the car

I may try Diamond D971 front speakers or Morel elate 3-ways. Door-mounted midrange/midbass and kick-panel mounted tweets or mids/tweets. KP pods for a 6.5 or 7 would be HUGE. I like my dead-pedal!

The last time I added sound damping to the doors of a car it was my 91 CRX. I used VB-2 from Cascade Audio Engineering. It was relatively light-weight - much lighter than Dynamat (if anyone still uses Dynamat), so I'll probably try that again, unless there's something better out now.

Stereos just weigh too much

But to he11 with it... I need good sound. I'll see if I can keep weight under control

Well you could always put together your own component set using the Eton hex woofer.....

When i re-installed mine i was more weight-conscious and space saving in the design i have now. I have the alpine type-x 10" @ 27lbs. the box i had prier to the new one was about 60lbs. I went with a custom FG corner box wieghting in at 12lbs. I didnt go complete weight-conscious with everything, just the box.

I did one using all Morel speakers, Morel Integra Ovation 10" sub, Alto Mobile Amps. The Amps are digital and are 90% efficient and draw very little amperage thus I only needed to run one single eight gauge wire for the whole shabang.

Here is the link with pics.

edit: After talking with Morel at length it was also determined that the sub needs an extra 150 watts to meets its needs. It does lack and would not meet your 25hz goal well the way I have it set up. You would need to add a different amp.

Wow! that's an awesome weight savings. I need to learn how to do FG...

Sweet... weight savings in smaller gauge powe wire... interesting...

But all coming it at 27lbs!?! including the sub? That's what I'm talking about. granted no 25 Hz, but strong 50Hz response would be nice... way better than BLOSE

mmm, tasty I'll check it out...

EDIT: Hmmm... nominal Impedance is 8 ohms on all of these. I'd have to have an active crossover versus buying some passive crossovers somewhere....

THere's also a 10lb 10-inch sub - has a neodymuim magnet versus ferrite... Wonder how it sounds???

^^^ That's the Aura sub. Aura is a fantastic sub. I had that exact ns10 model. Very accurate and musical. And in the proper enclosure it WILL dip down very deep for you.
