Default Help Pairing Sub(s) With My Amp

Hey guys, I installed my new headunit last week and ran all the wires for my amplifier, now I just need a sub or subs to pair with the amp:

Headunit: AVIC-D3
Amplifier: Rockford 400-2 (100x2 @4ohm, 200x2 @2ohm, 400x1 @4ohm bridged)

First of all, I'm highly confused by the DVC wiring diagram cheat-sheets on the Rockford site, but the more I read the more I think I should go with a single 10" and not two. It appears most of the subs I have considered are dual voice coil which is why I was checking out the diagrams in the first place, and it appears the installation is a little different than a single voice coil.

With this particular amp, would you also recommend using a single 10 and running it to the max RMS vs pushing two subs off of the amp that won't be at their max potential? I'm probably going to purchase an understrut box from ZEnclosures and I'm certainly looking for tighter/cleaner bass rather than mind-numbing.

Last, since this is a two channel amp, could someone help clear up the wiring process for me to get the most out of the amp using DVC subs?

Thanks!

What kind of subs are you considering?

As for wiring

If you are going to use that amp and want DVC subs. You have to get ones with 2ohm coils.

1 sub with 2 ohm DVC will get you a 4 ohm ending so you can use the 400x1 bridged

2 subs with 2 ohm DVC can get you a 2 ohm ending so you can do the 200x2

My recomendation is to get the one "better" sub in a zenclosure with more power, rather than getting 2 really cheap woofers.

Listen to him on this, and take my recommendation. Kenwood really Thumbs with only one 10". Unless you really want to go top end, get JL 10W6, that will fit the Zenclosure.

If you have been in a Z with a 10 - its plenty for the car. I have a 10W6 (4+4) wire in parallel 2ohm load. I have an Alpine powering the sub.

your using very little power even with your amp maxed , enough for 1 sub not 2 anyway

have you choosen a sub yet or negative

To answer the question above, no I haven't picked out my sub yet. The other posts are helping confirm my initial plan to go with a single 10. I guess the next question would be which sub would you recommend to push with the 400x1 @4ohm bridged setting? I'm not sure how reliable the paperwork that comes with the Rockford amp is showing the actual tested output of the amp is 470 even though its rated at 400 - but I've noticed a lot of 10" subs are rated at 400watts or lower - and I've read its recommended to only supply 75-90% of a subs RMS.

I haven't looked any many subs yet, but of the ones I have, the Infinity Kappa 10 is out since it cannot handle the 400watts. I'm sure some of the higher end Rockford subs could, and I need to check out the JL 10W6 to see what it is rated at.

I'll gladly accept any other recommendations as well

Thanks for all the tips so far!

1 each 10" good
your punch is not 1 ohm stable
2 ohm yes

it makes best power at bridged 4 ohm

i would buy a DVC 2 ohm sub and run it in a 4 ohm load

to achieve 400 watts

what is your budget for this sub, and what enclosure zen

the RF paper work is 100% accurate

it will make 470 watts at 4 ohms bridged but at 14 volts

I either want the standard understrut box or the new type-s "stealthy design" box that sits behind the strut. That was going to be my next question, which one, if either, would give better performance over the other? I'm not worried about space since there isn't much in the hatch anyway, but I like the stealthy design since it sits back...but if the understrut box is better I'm fine with that as well.

As for budget, around $250 max if possible...under would be preferred

your not using name brands to describe these boxes

are we talking zenclosure under strut if yes than mounting depth is less than 7"

so we need a 10 " dvc sub 2 ohm that can work best sealed .80 net after displacment, and off 400 watts

let me see

Resonant engineering model SE 10 " 2 ohm sub , mounting depth 6" , max watts 600 optimal sealed .65 net

( this choice will work , with your amp now, but replacing with a larger amp will make it better , FI model SSD 10" 800 rms , DVC 2 ohm , mounting depth 6" $ 179 shipped .6 to 1 sealed net)

Mmats pro audio p2.5 10 " DVC 2 ohm sub , 500 rms , mounting depth 5 5/8" ,
.8 net

Ah yes, you are correct, the Zenclosure boxes, either under the strut or between the strut and seats.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will check those out!

D2 Image Dynamics IDQ
D2 Kicker CVR
400 watts isn't really enough to justify splitting between two subs.

Hey guys, one other quick question - since amps can be underrated, are subs the same way? I was really interested in an Infinity Kappa Perfect 10" (4ohm, 400watts) but then I was worried since the Rockford amp was rated at 470watts x1 @ 4ohm bridged (400 on the box, 470 with the official paper inside the box) that it would be too much, however, is there still a chance the Infinity would be a good match? I had an old 12" Kappa in my 240sx and really liked it...so I'd like to go with a Kappa Perfect if possible this time around.

Thanks again!

the minority of amps make more actual power than rated

most amps just make what they are rated to do not more , some make more

subs now i have my own theory about these
if i owned a sub company than the money is made when i sell a sub, not when i replace it under warranty

that being said it would be in my best interest if i owned a sub company to rate my subs power at less than it can actually take to keep returns to a minimum
