Default Components Recommendation for JL 300/2

I bought some JL XR-650-CSi component speakers used on the forumns here and JL 300/2 amp. The guy I bought them from ran them with the JL amp.

Anyways, I got them installed about 4-5 months ago and about a month after the install I started hearing not so good sounds, which I thought was them rattling due to a possible bad install. Well, over time they have gotten worse, and now they sound like they are blown out. I have a LP filter on them, but certain lower freq. noise makes them sound like crap.

I have never heard a blown out speaker before - does this sound like that is teh case here?

If they are blown out, what speakers would people recommend for the 300/2 amp? I really liked these components, but I dont want to chance them blowing out again if I get the same pair.

where do you have them crossed over? perhaps you are trying to play them at a frequency they are not optimal at .. you should be using a HPF on them not LPF.. i have my front stage crossed over at 100 hz

as much as i hate JL Audio Products.. i would rather you fix your current problem with having to spend extra

Sorry, ya HPF.

Its set at 125... if I move it down to 80 or 60, the rattling gets much worse.

Is it possible that its a mounting issue? I should take the door panel off and check it out.

the JL XR's only take 70 watts RMS each, the 300/2 is feeding them 150 watts RMS each. way too much power for those speakers

+1, that is if he has the gains turned more sensitive. He may have them backed off.

This rattling you speak of could very well be the infamous door panel buzz. Have you deadened the doors at all?

Here's what I would do:
* Tune the gains on the amp to get 70 watts from the output leads by following this tutorial (your target=16.7 volts) - http://www.subwoofertools.com/forum/setgain.asp
* Adjust your HPF to 100Hz
* Pull the door panel off and then play some music

Are you still hearing the rattle/buzz/hum? Can you quell this by damping the door with your hands?

simplist thing to do , is remove the speaker, hold it in your ahnd, and play it, if it still makes that horrible sound, its prolly blown...

125hz hp should not blow a speaker, unless you really really got the gains cranked...lol another benefit of kicks is increased power handling on the spekaers

whats your budget?

Alright, so it turns out that my drivers are the source of the rattling, so I am going to replace them.

From purely a fitment and power handling standpoint, anyone have recommendations for component speakers?

I also am going to put in some rear speakers to fun off of my head unit for rear fill. Recommendations there would be nice as well.

Thanks for everyone's help.

How about the Diamond Audio S600s? It says mounting depth is 2-1/8"... and my JL XR650's have a mounting depth of 2.81 in. Should be easier to fit cause right now I have a pretty big door spacer.

For the rear, I could do the diamond D362i... but the problem is that they call for 60 watts RMS and my headunit is probably 22 watts.

16psibrick can build you a really nice set of kicks with speakers for a good price. He did mine and its amazing. I would recommending doing kicks and then you wouldn't have to worry about mounting depth.

I am really hesitant about doing Kicks. I think I will actually "kick" them, and I would like it to look as much like stock as possile. I have though about doing the DIY mod to the speaker grills though to help the sound quality.
