Portable Hard Drive for USB??

I was wondering today if you can connect say a 160 Gig potable hard drive to the USB connection in the back of alot of head units, instead of a memory stick? Would be kick *** for loads of music and videos

I talked with a few people about this and they said as long as its formated in your home computer right it would work.
