I've seen this time and time again; can someone tell me about the sound quality of this unit?

I've seen numerous posts on how this unit rocks, and kicks so much ****, but not one on how GOOD it sounds. I have a GPS unit currently, so the GPS feature doesn't wow me. Haven't watched a DVD in the car for more than 6 years.

I do however, like the fact that it fills the entire openning as well as matches the amber lighting almost perfectly. Being a Techy-kinda guy as well as on the border of flashy, I'd like something that not only looks good, but sounds as awesome as can be. It's no audiophile head unit I know, but how close it is to one?

Maybe I'll just grab the McIntosh MX046 like a good friend of mine. Then again, I could get the Denon Z1 and make an actual investment that will match my Morel & Seas Lotus speaker system. Meh...

hehe, well, everoyne has thier own level of experience and preference, so its hard to take someone else's "rocks!" and "aewsome" at your own level.

i will tel you one thing, its definetly not hte cleanest headunit around, its not bad of course, no worse than say a comparable priced nav headunit, but one thing about it, the preamp outvoltage is garbage, they say its 2volt, but hoesntly, i tink its quite a bit worse than the similar 2volt on say a z1 or z2, this is coming form installing in the same car with identical gear, wtih just a headunit difference.

the voltage issue however, can cured with a simple line driver (sub 100 bucks).

for the features that it has, the d3 is hard to beat for price, but if you are truly looking for SQ, thats not hte right choice, unless, you use the optical out and then do a standalone dac...whcih obviously would be expensive, and not to mention you would loose volume control on the D3 itself

^ Exactly... So the D3 and other "all in one units" are NOT what I should be looking at. Great, I'll keep my eyes open for something in the $1,200+ range for true Sound Quality...
