Default ...so I had this idea last night...

sorry this is long...

First off, I have an 06 Z touring with the crappy Bose stereo in it. I really want to get a D3, but I'm worried about my car getting broken into and the stereo stolen (my last car was broken into). Soooo, since none of the new Double DIN nav units like the D3 come with a removable face, I was thinking about how I could "hide" the stereo from thieves. I already got the dark tint windows, and alarm is next on my list, but that's not going to stop a thief who wants to break in. Well, nothing will stop a thief really, but I keep thinking that "a thief won't steal what he can't see". So with that in mind, I was thinking about making a cover of sorts to hide the radio. It basically would be about the same size as the stereo, but a little larger, be a half an inch high or so to account for *****, buttons, etc., and probably made of metal. So basically it would be like a black, shallow metal box. It wouldn't be attached to the car, but rather would "hang" from the lip above the stereo (the bottom of the cubby, between the cubby door, if that makes sense). That way, I could just put it on there when I'm at the mall parking lot, or whenever I felt like I needed to hide my stereo from thieves. For added security, I could also put a battery operated flashing LED in it, and heck, maybe even a fake key lock or something.

What do ya'll think? I think it might be kinda cool actually, and of course it won't stop a thief, but it may deter them since they can't see what's under it. Then again, it may also make them more curious and want to break in even more badly. I guess that's where I'm hoping the fake lock on it and the alarm system might deter them. I'll have to mock something up and see how it looks.

by the way, nobody steal my idea - patent pending! hahaha

Opinions?

It's been done. But it's a good idea none-the-less. Several people, and they've posted here about it, have crafted "face plates" to cover their double-din aftermarket headunits, by using the face off the original crappy oem stereo.

Seek and ye shall find. In other words, you'll have to search brother.

It is a good idea.....if you can fabricate it to look good. As said, you could canibalize the OE headunit and pull the face off and the buttons. The buttons will need to be hot-glued into their openings in the face. I have seen someone use little round magnets hot glued to the back of corners of the stealth face and matching magnets glued to the inside corners of the center stack finisher so the stealth face is essentially held there with the magnets.

Yep, my experience is that a thief will not steal what they can't see. They won't gamble on the risk/reward factor if they're smart that is. My cars have been broken into twice and this sounds like a great idea!

Think about the new Jvc KW-AVX 810, it has removable face, don't know about navi.
