Default Audio install not working properly

Hello Everyone,

Well for the last few weeks I have been working on putting together my audio system for my car.

I purchased the equipment from another member (previously built by Bing) and all the wiring was purchased from Elemental Design.

This was my first install that I have ever done on any vehicle. I have done other electrical work such as my Defi install, Turbo timer and other various items, but nothing like a full audio install.

Well after spending a few days over the last few weeks, I finally completed the install. I ran every wire through the car myself, and was fairly confident that things would work, but now it is not as perfect as I had hoped.

Well onto the problem:

The Subs seem to be hitting very hard but I am assuming that is because the volume is rather high.

At the moment only my passenger side tweeter is working, both rear speakers are working, but neither front speakers work. I finally got the Driver side to work, but it sounds more like a sub than anything. I flipped the RCA's around and nothing.

On top of that, the Amp only works when I plug 1 side from the Cross overs in. With both, it lights up red.

Sorry for the long post, but if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to post. Thank you.

Honestly, you may want to have someone more familiar with car audio check this for you in person. It sounds like there may be signal wire problems as well as crossover setting problems. I'm sure there is someone local who could help you out.

You saying you're plugging in the crossovers to the amp scares me. The crossovers need to go after the amp in the signal chain.

Lastly, it might be helpful to create a wiring diagram on how you wired everything. This will help us visualize what's going on as well as possibly allow you to isolate the problem.

Need to spend a little money to have someone with experience look at it. What sucks is that they will have to go through and check all of your wiring and start from square one.

It will end up costing you more than it originally would have. You could always remove everything and just ask the shop to install the components for you. That way they do not have to bill you for the removal of anything.

Hello everyone,

Well both Kwame and Noah have been assisting me in my install as far as questions I had went, but with wiring I had done it all myself.

Here is a very crude picture of the wiring. I did not include any of the power wires, or grounds.

The Blue lines signify the speaker wire. Though from each door there should be 2 lines one for the tweeter and one for the woofer.

The Red lines signify the RCA wires.

The subs are between the two amps (Set up in Parallel). The smaller black boxes are the crossovers.

Thank you all again.

It looks to me like you have one channel of the RCA's plugged into the sub amp and the other into the other amp. Correct me if I'm wrong. You also don't show how your rear speakers are hooked up.

Besides that, it's basically correct... but since it's not working, that means either the drawing is wrong or the connections are wrong... or both.

It may be worth looking at your wiring again and make sure all of your speakers are connected correctly. Label each end of the wires with tape, etc. marking "+" and "-" and whether they are a midbass or tweeter.

I hate to say this, but this may not be a problem that can be easily solved on a forum. We would basically have to start with step 1- which means you'd have to unhook everything.

After going through the wiring, we'd have to move into crossover settings on the amps (no need since you have the passives) but if you have a filter on when it shouldn't be it could affect the sound.

Then, we'd have to move into settings (if any) on the head unit.

If the light on the amp is lighting up red when you plug in one of the speakers, that indicates that one or both of the speaker wires or speaker terminals are gounding out on metal somewhere. I would remove the door panels and make sure that there are no bare wires touching any metal and make sure that the crossovers are hooked up properly. If the drivers side midrange sounds like a sub then you probably have the crossover settings on the amp wrong, but if that was the case you wouldn't get any sound from either tweeter. It sounds like you may have hooked up the amp incorrectly, and have a grounded wire somewhere.

The problem was solved today. The Amps were not set correctly. The system completely works now and sounds great.

Thank you all for your help.

Please elaborate so that others who may have this problem will be helped.

How were the amps set incorrectly and what was done to fix them?
