Just completed the following set-up in my TRACK to do the same thing: Stock HU, high-level front channels to Audio Control EQLII ($85 on eBAY) mounted in lower bin in rear glove box, feeding low-level to Jensen JXP680 (4-channels @ 60W RMS ea; $100 at eTronics) mounted behind Bose subwoofer cut-out location, feeding Infinity Reference 1032W 10" dual voice coil subwoofer ($70 at eTronics) mounted in Bose sub location (amp in 3-channel mode with each rear amp out to each voice-coil (producing 120W RMS for sub), and feeding Infinity Reference 6000CS 6" front speakers ($100 at Circuit City) mounted in OE front plastic speaker baskets by gutting OE speaker (procedure posted elsewhere, and works GREAT!). I left rear speakers stock and powered directly by stock HU rear channel output. Rear signal is ambient fill only with minimal bass, so investment in upgrading rear sound is very low value, IMO. Replaced non-BOSE subwoofer trim cover with Bose version ($14 from Nissan). Result is COMPLETELY stock looking setup with better sound than OE BOSE (especially tighter and less muddy bass).
Most of my time in the last 3 weeks after install completion has been tuning. Purchased Test CD#3 from Stereophile Magazine ($9.95 on-line), heavily using tracks #17-#19 (Warble tones from 20-20k Hz) to tune. Ultimately ended up using full-range amp output into front speakers (no crossover), with 40Hz LPF crossover setting to subwoofer. There seems to be a large vehicle resonance at 60-ish Hz that this tames (additionally required -6 to -9 db attenuation at 63Hz on EQLII), anf full-range output to front maintains good bass imaging and tight sound.
Next on the agenda is to work on improving trim panel buzzes, but even with this is a MAJOR improvement over stock. This system is far from show quality, but for less than $400 is an appropriate investment. Remember, the Z is a noisy car, so I don't feel that further improvements will be that noticeable.
Good Luck!

I added a JBL C608GTi comonent set to the doors powered by a JBL Px600.2 amp in the storage space and a basslink in the stock sub location. Sounds great, the JBLs really crank with 150 watts RMS going to them. Smooth highs and excellent midbass. The basslink adds adequate bottom end.
