^^ Which factory H/U are you asking about? (Clarion or Bose)

Yes it is possible, but depending on what you want to amplify the results are usually not too great. If you want to just add a aftermarket sub and sub amp the sound quality will be OK. You will need a speaker level to RCA level adapter such as the PAC SNI-35 which you can connect to the speaker wires that are at the factory subwoofer. If you plan on adding a multi-channel amp for the front and/or rear speakers I highly recommend using a good quality speaker level to RCA level adapter, such as the Audio Control LC7. Keep in mind that the main reason that factory systems sound so bad is because the deck is garbage, so by adding a amp to the factory deck you are simply amplifying garbage sound quality. I have customers of mine that frequently want to add amps to the factory systems, and after a short time many of them come back to get the deck changed out because it gives such an improvement in sound. Here are some liks to the adapters that are needed.

I agree with what Pete says above. Adding an external amp to the stock/factory H/U won't provide any substantial improvement. In fact I did this (and the result was poor), so I'm speaking from personal experience.

It doesn't get you much for these reasons:
  • The stock/factory H/U is low quality and cannot deliver a quality signal to the new amp.
  • Even if you are able to improve the sound with an external amp, the cheap OEM speakers are designed to balance with the low power from the stock H/U and its low quality/power amp, and cannot take advantage of better sound from an external amp.

If your budget is tight, buy a decent H/U now, and wait on the extenal amp until you can afford better speakers to go with this. As Pete mentions, you will need an adapter since you have the Bose system in your car.

I would opt for the Audio Control EQX. It allows speaker level inputs, gives you four low level (RCA) outs. It gives better control over what is going on due to the eq, but that's just my position.

I am running Focal Front 165 VRS Slim, two blaupunkt THA PNP 275's and a JL 10W1 in a Zenclosure box off stock unit. I used the Cleansweep for a bit but I found it to be way too much money for what you got compared to a EQX.

If you decide to upgrade the system, upgrade both to good front component speakers and a good amp. Otherwise you will not see much of an improvement. I tried it by changing only speakers first with poor result. Only when I added a JL amp did I have a great result. Have in mind that you dont really need any line output converter if you use a JL amp because of the differential-balanced inputs it has.

^^ You are correct.

The only thing that might defeat this is a very poor H/U.

I need some help here....

FYI, I have the BOSE System. I changed the HU to Alpine 502 and now I stucked in a very bad situation.

I have intention to upgrade the Audio System progressively, overall budget is about 3-4k. I changed the HU yesterday as part of progressive upgrade plan. To my surprise, my stock BOSE amp was bypassed thus losing the amp and subwoofer together. The tech said the stock BOSE cannot be used with the HU. (Is that true)?

I have a very good HU now but sounds more horrible than it used to be, not to mention the absence of bass (subwoofer).

I have a huge bill to pay next month and would only have budget to complete the setup 2-3 months from now, but the sound is unbearable. What should I do now...?

1. Drop in a cheap multichannel amp to power the speakers and subwoofer for the time being (2-3 mths)

2. Drop in a Active Sub, so I can get the bass back.

3. Squeeze out some cash, go to the next stage of my progressive upgrade - Drop a in good amp and good sub which would probably cost me 1-2k which will get the bass back, but the speakers will still be horrible. This would be the least preferred route due to budget constraint.

4. Others?
