Default Pic request: Tweeters installed?!

Hi folks...

Anyone have aftermarket tweeters installed in the stock locations? How did you mount them? Behind the stock tweeter cover, or flush mount? Surface/swivel mount?

Pics would help! Also, what brand and model the components are... Thanks!

Ha, sometimes it takes a few *bumps* to get a response. Every install I've seen has been either behind the stock grille or flush mounted. Nearly all 3/4" or 1" tweets should fit fine behind the grille and you should only need to flush mount the larger tweets. I've yet to see a surface mount...

As for good components, depends on your tastes and budget. Do you like a very bright, dynamic sounding speaker or a more subdued natural sound?

You can check out my components at the link in my sig.

Thanks, powerz...

The Alpine comps were exactly what I was looking at. How do you like them? I have only heard them on the sound board, and they seemed very nice (not too crisp or tinny, with some nice midbass) ...

Fitament ok? How big of a spacer did you use in the door for the mid?

heh, just noticed you have the 9815 as well. I just installed mine 2 days ago

Actually the Alpine components are still awaiting install. My current set came unglued - literally - and the Alpines are the replacement. I too have only heard them in the board, but I LOVED them, especially for the price. The other set I would consider in that price range is the Infinity Reference. Both get great reviews and have a nice smooth tweeter. The Z interior and tweet location lead to a VERY bright sound, so even with the silky smooth Alpines I'm expecting to use -3, if not -6 to balance things out.

For a spacer, I'm using a set of cut out stock speakers. Hopefully that will work with the Alpines too. If not I'll use MDF to fab a spacer ring.

As for the 9815 - it is amazing. Time correction is an absolutely beautiful thing!

I installed Diamond Audio M.661's in my Sentra. They were extremely bright, even at -3 (the lowest setting) on the crossover. I had to point them towards eachother to cut down on my ear pain. If I read you correctly, I should *not* install these in my new Z?

Also, what do you mean when you say "Time correction" in your HU?

Diamonds are a notoriously bright speaker - Some people love it, but it makes my ears bleed. Installing those in the stock location would be unbearable IMHO, especially if you thought they were too much in your Sentra. If you want to use them I would definitely not use the stock location; try building kick panels or installing the tweeter by the midrange. You could also try using a 4 channel amp and giving each speaker it's own channel, cutting the gain on the tweeters. Personally, I'd eBay them and try to find a deal on new set.

Time correction is a new feature that allows you to adjust for uneven placement of speakers to get perfect imaging from an imperfect layout. For example, the passenger side speaker is noticably farther away from your ears than the drivers side. Time correction allows you to delay the sound coming from the drivers side so that both "sounds" reach your ear at the same time. I had this on my home receiver and HAD to have it in my car too!

Good idea about ebaying the speakers ... I could probably get $175 for them, seeing as how I spent $250 on them about three months ago. But what do I do about the holes I cut in the Sentra door panels?

Time correction sounds interesting, but does it really make that much of a difference in such close quarters? I mean sound travels really fast, and when the distance between your ear and any given speaker is only variant by 2 or 3 feet ... can you really perceive a timing differential?

Buy some cheap coax speakers for the sentra maybe?

Actually the time correction makes a HUGE difference. You are right that it only takes milliseconds longer for the sound from the passenger speaker to reach your ear. But, your ears are very good at perceiving distance and location based on these small changes. With out the time correction it is easy to tell that the passenger speaker is almost twice as far away. With time correction turned on everything is much more balanced with a cleaner sound. Granted the passenger gets less than ideal sound, but that's another discussion.

You can also use the time correction feature to point your sound stage in different directions... for both the driver AND passenger. I was able to mess around with the settings enough to make the shift the sound towards the center of the dash ...

Of course, that is sort of like a band-aid for sound stage... optimally, you'd want to point the speakers in the right directions from install.

I'd really like to hear different systmes in different Z's ... is this possible when Z owners get together from time to time? Is it an unusual request to listen to other peoples stereos in the car, with the doors closed to be able to compare systems?
