Doing some [Alarm│Remote Start] research
I am doing some research right now, both here and with Google on the
Viper 5901 Alarm│Remote Start system. It seems to use some pretty
sophisticated technology and I am hoping it makes the install less arduous
than when I installed the 791XV.
This is direct from Viper: XpressPort™ - Dock the Innovations Award-winning CANMAX400DEI databus interface into the Responder LC3 CPU, for a direct digital connection to virtually every new vehicle and databus architecture on the planet.
Am I correct in understanding this means that for window control, trunk release or door lock control, the alarm would interface through the databus connection?
Does anyone have this alarm installed on their 03-05 Z?

I have the 5901 installed on an 03 touring with a manual trans. Im not sure about the databus connection because I didn't install it but I can tell u that I can roll my windows up and down (no extra equipment needed), remote start the car (with manual trans, will not start unless ebrake is engaged), open hatch, and unlock/lock doors. Hope this helps u.
the window up and down works just like the factory keyfob (extended pulse on the lock and unlock wires) basically holding the lock or unlock button down until the windows operate...unlock and lock can be done trhough data unless you want to run the wires into the door to the doorlock module and the hatch release i believe can be done through data...if not all you need is a relay and use the validity channel 2 output or holding the aux button on the 5901 remote down for a few seconds...this is all pretty standard stuff and can be done very easily without the data interface...
not always, i live in Panama city Florida, the biggest hills around here are sand dunes so your car wont really go anywhere even if its out of gear and no ebrake but i use the ebrake so my friends cant roll my car down the street to **** me off

I will be installing this alarm myself since I have had one too many bad
installs done by shops I thought were capable. Since then, I ask just a few
questions before I decide if they are touching my car. If they answer no to
"Do you solder connections?" I am gone before I even ask how long they warranty their labor.
I did my 300ZX myself when I did the heater core and had the entire dash
out of the car. I soldered every connection, used heat shrink tubing and
wrapped all wires inside new wire looms. This is how I plan to do this Z.
I am just not sure if I want to go into the door or use the databus. I suspect I will use which ever options results in fewer OEM wires tapped into.
its not an always or not always thing... if you learned how to drive manual transmission the right way.. you will always park your car in gear.. it doesn't matter what the car does or not.. just like we learn to put on underwear before we put on our pants
The 350Z has an OEM PNP switch that can be used to safely add a remote start to a 6MT. The signal goes to the ECU and is grouned when the tranny is in N. This is the ONLY safe way to hook up a remote start to the car (unless you have an annoying unit designed for manual trannys where you have to go through a shut down procedure everytime you shut the car off).
I've personally never seen a data module that will do windows, typically you have to go to the doors to get them. There may be a newer interface that does it, but if there is I haven't seen it yet.
The Zs are pretty striaght forward to do - the only hassle is getting inside the doors.

On the first 300Z I had, Best Buy did it and man, they damn near shorted
out every device in the car. They were pissed when I told them how much
a new clock cost! but in the end, they paid for it. That car was sold a few
weeks later.
My second Z I did myself.
A "specialty" alarm and audio shop in New Brunswick on Rt 1 (I thing it was
Rt 1) did my Acura TL and botched it up. Only the drivers side of the windows work via remote and if I try to operate the other side, the drivers
rear window drops ˝ inch. The alarm will activate even if the key is in the
ignition and the door open. The engine has to be running to prevent the alarm from activating.
No, I think I'll do the latest Z myself....
If you know how to work with car alarm do it man, these shops usually do a bad job because it's not their car, right now i'm having a problem with my driver side window it drops half way sometimes, i don't know if the problem is with the alarm or the window controller.
It helps if you know the installer (at least speak with him befor the install). Let him know that BEFORE the car is put back togehter you want to inspect the installation.
Most small shops pay their installers on comission - the more they install the more money they make. If they think you are like all the other customers and don't care what the install looks like they won't go out of their way to do a good job.
Also, only let an installer that solders ALL connections do the work, if they use any other type of splice method chances are there will be problems with the connections down the road.
If you can use a meter and make solid connections there is no reason to have a shop do the install - these cars are pretty easy to work on!

I did my rem start/alarm install on my 03 touring...wasn't bad at all..went into the door for the door lock wires...and used relay to hook up hatch release...here is all the wiring info you would need to do the install on your car...hope it helps...just remember to test every wire before you tap on to it

doesn't matter?
I will most likely be doing this myself....I will take my time and be sure
every connection secure before moving to the next one.
How do you like the new remote? My TL has the 791XV and the remote is the older style, I see the 5901 uses a newer remote. Less buttons and the
display is also different.
Well I bought the Viper 5901 alarm today. I also bought a set of trim panel
removal tools, I bought the metal and nylon type for taking the door panel off.
I am just looking into the data bus module.
Oh, and I need a stronger solder gun.
