Default navigation in the Z

I'm looking to buy a 7" Pioneer navigation for my 2007 enthusiast z. Im wondering if its possible to put the navigation into the console rather than the slot for the radio. The slot is useless and if the navi is in the radio compartment it'll be so low i wont be able to watch dvds in park or will I? anyone done the same or know what I can do?

Double-Din H/U's do not fit in the upper forward cubby. They will only fit into the DD slot (the OEM H/U position).

Search here to see much discussion of this point. A search will provide you with a lot of information helping you to understand impotant considerstions so you make the right decision.

I prefer it in the radio location. Within fingers reach of the gear select.

I installed an Avic D3, looks OEM and I still have the storage above.

The downside of navigation located in the Z’s DD slot is the poor screen location for viewing/operating active navigation.

There is an informal agreement among car manufacturers and GPS suppliers to position the screen for safe viewing (no less than 25 degrees below the driver's eye level). And, that position in the Z is inside the upper/forward cubby, above the double-din slot (but not in the double-din slot).

That is good info...

I bought this model because it could easily play DVD's while the vehicle
is in motion but have so far not done so and when using the Nav, I mainly listen for
the prompts and audible directions. The phone is bluetooth and the iPod or XM
play without much input from me except to change the channel, all of which I
can do without looking at it since it is within fingers reach of the gear select.

I suppose if I was looking down at it, I might not appreciate that location as much...

Since the Avic D3 can output to a composite source, could a TFT screen be placed
in the pocket to mirror the main display? I have even seen such screens with touch controls built in. It would probably require a bit of a hack job to the head unit.

Or maybe a steering wheel control for the headunit to augment not touching the secondary display?
