Radar detector question...
I suspect that there still a few small town law enforcement outfits with low budgets that are still using the older type radar units. Don't know for sure, but when I travel I like having it available—just in case.

One time crossing PA on I-80 I was going like 80+ in my Durango. There was some very light traffic (like a car every 1/4 mile) but mostly empty.
When my laser detector went of I nabbed the brakes and hit 54.9 MPH in like 1 second. (remember this is an SUV, not a sports car).
As I went over the next hill there he was, a cop with a laser gun out his drivers window.
He must have been shooting at someone in front of me. My V1 definetely saved me a big old ticket that day.
I have worked with and designed infrared instruments for over 15 years and I can tell you this... infrared scatters a LOT in a moist atmosphere. Even though the laser guns are an infrared laser, there is plenty of spill over.
It is true that if he wait until he sees you, aims carefully, and pulls the trigger you are dead. But if he misses the first shot, or shoots at someone else first then you are still in the game.
Just my $0.02.
