Default Is My Nav Defective?

I have an '08 Touring with the Bose nav system. I didn't specifically need the nav, but it came with something else I did want, which is the side curtain airbags.
Anyway, while the nav does a good job of telling me where I am and what gas stations are nearby - not totally valueless - it seems almost impossible to program an address into it. The toggle entry is bad enough, but it seems like every time I click a number or letter, it takes several minutes to get control back - like it's just sitting there frozen. As a result, I have tried several times to program in an address only to give up in frustration ten minutes later, having only programmed part of it in.
I'm taking it to Nissan to have them check it out tomorrow, but I have found very little searching on nav problems, and the Nissan service guy said he almost never gets a car in because of a nav issue.
Does everyone else just give up on being able to enter addresses in this thing, or is there something wrong with mine?

And yes, this is while I'm sitting still. I am aware that it can't be programmed while in motion.

Thanks,

Sean

Sean… It sounds as though the device is searching for a close match with each character you enter. The device shouldn’t do that unless you type a character and then hit enter.

Nissan’s OEM navigation is supplied by Xanavi, a division of Clarion. It’s notoriously slow compared to some of the aftermarket nav products (e.g., Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc.), but that’s mainly because the OEM device is DVD based (very mechanical and thus comparatively slow).

With this said, I’m guessing you have a bad disk. The dealer should swap your disk for a new one. I’ll bet that fixes the problem.

Thanks, Spike. Hopefully you're right, and a disk swap or something similar fixes it. I'm not expecting it to be lightning fast, but it's so slow right now as to be unusable.

Well, they looked at it today and determined that either the DVD or the player is bad. The DVD, they tell me, is not an 'under warranty" item. "That's fine", i say, "But I've never even looked into how to remove the DVD, so if it's scratched, it was that way when I took delivery". Now they tell me they're trying to find another DVD to try, but they can't fine one. WTF? Wish me luck.

^^ That’s really pathetic. A decent Nissan dealer should be capable of resolving the problem immediately. The OEM navigation device is slow, but your problem indicates a fault.

It’s time to take your problem to a competent dealer. You should also report your experience and this inadequate dealer to Nissan USA.
