NEWS - JL Stealthbox
Got email yesterday from one of the guys at JL that I've been talking to about the Stealthbox. His last response:
"Well, we've been through a few design exercises on the 350Z. The area behind the driver's seat has been pushed aside at this time in favor of a dual 10" enclosure to fit between the shock tower brace and the OEM speaker bridge. The feedback I've heard so far is this area is dead space anyway and the added output of the dual 10's would add to the performance image of the car...not to mention sound really good. I'm hoping to have this model ready for delivery by the end of the year. Sooner if possible. Our design schedule is very full at the moment, so we're having to divide our time over quite a few projects. We appreciate your patience. Thanks for your interest."
Maybe we'll all have a nice Xmas present from JL!

Oh man...what to do? I'm this close *--* to gettting the Basslink.....looks like I'm gonna have to wait and see exactly what this stealth design with the two 10's is gonna look like.
BTW.....what would be a good mono amp to run a set-up like this? I know not knowing what type of JL sub will be in the stealth box limits the amp choices, but I'm open for options.
SWEET!!
Thanks for the news!

My basslink arrives next week. DAMN IT.
Well, I guess i'll put the basslink to use for a few months and then ebay it for $120-$150.
Although keep in mind that for a dual 10" JL stealthbox, expect it to be $600+

build the box yourself... it's really simple, goto home depot and pick up some 3/4" mdf, and saw it away! it shoudn't take more than a day to build one. you can be creative with your own box!
Guys, I don't know why so many people are waiting so long for this product or another.
there are actually other alternatives to subs, this will fit in the same area, I would put JMlabs/Focal up against ANY speaker manufacture in the WORLD (yes, this includes JL)
the fab of this enclosure is increadable, and that is saying somethng from someone who is a bit of a HOme Audiophile

rodH, that Focal box is nice. Is the box actually made by them? Is it just a box, or do they load it with a driver as well and sell it as a matched set? You mention 11" and 8.5", which sounds like they are making custom sizes to fit custom drivers.
But I agree with you on the quality of various subs. JL is great for shaking the neighbors around, but there are probably better options if you want sound quality.

Hmm... just dug around and found Focal's site, then dug further and found that box. It's the Polyglass line. Their new Access line (which is purported to be replacing the Polyglass line) uses ported boxes instead.
I much prefer the tighter bass response of sealed boxes. Thanks for the info... I'll keep my eye out for those Focal boxes when it comes time to deck out my Z.
Do you have experience with Focal mids and tweets, as well? My current car has Dynaudio drivers, and I've got to say they are the best I've ever heard. How does Focal compare?

Agreed. If you take a look at JL's other stealthboxes you'll see that they are designed to amazingly blend in with the car.
Meaning at first glance for someone who isn't familiar with the car, they won't be able to tell that theres a sub box in the car at all.
They're form fitted, covered in vinyl matching the interior, and are 100% within spec for optimal sound from JL sub.
Here's the one I have in my Z32 w/ a single JL 10W6:

SUCKS!
First, you would have to buy two 10s instead of one. Essentially, you would be pigeon holed into getting both.
Second, it would not be very stealth without a good cover. In some neighborhoods, visible subs = steal me sign.
Third, some of us actually use that space extensively. When I go on weekenders with the G/F, one large suit case goes in the center rear of the trunk, and all her little stuff goes forward of the strut tower bar. When I do track events, even more stuff get cramed in there.
For me, it is the stock location, a small side box in the rear-left corner, or nothing. Frankly, I prefer the stock location. However, to each his own. I just wish they would offer a couple solutions.

If the stock location didn't sound like poop I'd agree with you.
I personally never found that space between the strut tower and the rear bulkhead useful. I've never put anything there.
Well I can't now anyway.

I'm backing them on this only because I was more than happy with my Z32 stealthbox and i'm excited to hear that they're working on one for the Z33.
As for space, two JL 10's should require approx 2 cu. ft or less.
