Thumbs up Viper 5902 alarm install

Hi everyone,

Im thinking of gettting the new Viper 5902 installed? Does anyone have any experience with this system? I just spoke to my local shop (Winchester Auto Radio.. Winchester,VA) about doing the install. The guy seems very knowledgable and up front about the differences in systems/prices, etc.. He also stated how everything is soldered and very clean during the install and that his biggest fear is someone going in behind him and thinking he did Sh*tty work. So that was good to hear

System seems to have all the bells and whistles and has a kick-*** remote w lcd screen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3fwrea4dB0

I was quoted at $1000 installed, with added 2-stage proximity sensors (around the car and then an additional sensor for interior in case windows are left open, etc.) Also was explaining that this includes working with the nissan anti-theft gizmos and whatnot that need to be worked around for the auto-start,etc..

http://www.myspace.com/winchesterautoradio ...here you can see the attention to detail on the slide show for the sub/amp/rack install ...

Any experience with this system? Any other input? ..how does that price installed sound?

Thanks,
Rob

Let me be direct: I DESPISE my Viper alarm system and yes, I had it professionally installed.

I bought and installed the Viper 5002 security system a few months ago and it has given me headaches from day 1:

-range is advertised at .25 miles (about 1500 ft.) but it won't even register me pressing fob when my car is parked 20 ft. from my place nor will my fob buzz if my friend purposely sets off the alarm, again from only 20-30 feet away

-the range is greatly cut down if you have tinted windows

-the shock sensor and motion sensors are not sensitive enough; I have both the shock and two motion sensors set at maximum and the shock alarm will not register a firm tap on a window (which it should) nor will the motion sensors register someone brushing up against my car (it's advertised as being able to pick up someone just walking past or standing by the car which is complete BS)

-the shock and motion sensor are only supposed to detect large density objects, i.e., people or animals, and is supposed to ignore small density objects, i.e., rain or snow or leaves; whenever it rains or if there are leaves falling off trees, the alarm constantly goes off

-when arming the system, the fob is only supposed to buzz once if everything is okay; mine buzzes twice and indicates that the passenger side door is open (which it isn't and this bypass function has to disable the passenger door sensor to fully arm); the shop spent an entire weekend looking at this and couldn't find an answer

In short, stay away from Viper or any other Directed Electronics alarm systems like Clifford, Python, etc., because they will not work as advertised and they will not meet the outlandish claims of performance that Directed spews.

Yes, you can get an added option to control the alarm with an ipod. Unfortunately I have sprint and have a Palm Pre

GalvatronType_R ....wow, sounds like a horrible experience. Hopefully some of the problems that you have have since been addressed with the newer system. It sounds like the shop you had do the install didnt quite know what they were doing. Are you in the D.C. area? (Fail to the redskins lol) The shop im in talks with has been around for 35yrs and is a licensed Viper distributer. Hopefully they know whsat theyre doing if I decide to go ahead and get it done.

Any other comments from anyone?

I dont get that Iphone thing for controlling the viper alarm ..

it seems easier to me to just reach in my pocket and push a button on the remote .. instead you have to get out the iphone and mess with it for a minute to do the same thing

but thats just me ..

$1000 seems a little high to me .. but if the guy does really high quality work (soldering every connection and running wires neatly) and you got the money go for it

So the sensors are not sensitive enough, but the alarms go off even if leaves and rain touch the car?
I don't understand

I've got the Viper 5901 installed and i absolutely love it!!!

I get awesome range on it! only tested up to 1.5 kms so far (line of sight). However i have tried it when my car is parked in a building, 3 levels down and it remote starts consistently!!!

I do not share any common experiences with Galvatron at all! However i have not installed motion sensors as yet (not sure which he has installed).

I think do it! It's definately a sweet piece of work!

i've had good experience with Viper on my past cars... no problems..

get the glass breaking sensor.. it's a mic that can sense if the window is broken incase your shock sensor doesn't catch it.

Yes, I have metallic tint but my friend has non-metallic and his Viper alarm is not sensitive enough as well. Also besides the tint, it's not just Directed, most advertised alarm ranges are BS because they are tested in a sterile lab instead in the real world with weather conditions, sun, clouds, electromagnetic interference, etc., so if an alarm is rated for a mile, don't count on it.

Yes, the shock and motion sensors do not pick up a bump on the window nor someone brushing up against my car but it will detect and set off when it rains or if leaves fall. Don't ask me to explain why this is except that it's a crappy alarm.

I think meaning when your out of distance you can just do the remote start from your iphone etc.

The price seems a bit high. I have a Clifford 50.5x or whatever on my truck and it was only $200 (minus installation). The Nissan is a bit more complicated, but not that much.

Galvatron - did they use a "data module" for your car? I'm still not convinced that the data modules provided today are more reliable then the old fashioned hard wire.

My only complaint with my Clifford is the range is TOO good. For the first week I would get pages at work because I would accidently start my truck from deep inside the building. Seriously, who needs to start their car from 3,000' away? The other complaint I have is there is a serious lag if you are closer then ~10' to the vehicle. It's about 2 seconds or so. It really is only annoying if you accidently set the alarm off and are trying to quickly disarm it.

As far as not registering shock - the shock sensor is NOT designed to detect show on the windows. Vibration doesn't travel well from the glass to the car, so understandably the shock sensor will have a hard time picking it up. There is also an art to installing shock sensors - too firm and they won't pick anything up, too loose and they'll pick everything up (to an extent).

For $1,000 I would expect everything soldered (no data module), wires ran in to the doors for lock/unlock/window up/window down and all other applicable features hooked up. I would then offer them $800.

Lastly, let the installer know you want to inspect his work before he buttons the car up. Tell him you want to see where the brain is mounted (it shouldn't be easy to see or get to). Even if you don't know what you are looking for chances are the installer will do an extra special install just because he knows you care.
