Default Adjusting JL 500/1 with JL 10w7 sub ???

spent the last six hours wiring up my amp and sub

turned it on for a minute and got a nice clean beat now compared the the nasty bose sub

I read the JL manual on settings for the 500/1v2 amp when running a 10w7 sub ..

but I'm sort of confused on the tuning part

I downloaded a 45hz tone .. put it on a cd and hit repeat .. then put a voltmeter where the sub wires come out of the amp (screwed it in so got accurate reading) .. and played the tone over and over until I got the 38.7 volts the manual specifies

after doing this .. where'd most of my bass go .. still get a decent thump but idk

.......................................................

here is where im lost .. I got the optional bass control **** since I'm running it off a stock head unit with minimum bass adjustment

I turned the bass **** all the way up, volume to 28, and all HU settings at "0"

is that where everything should be when tuning to 38 volts

guess I'm trying to figure out .. is 38.7 volts supposed to be the "max" for the sub or what?

I read through the amp manual a few times ..

says turn the bass eq (bass boost or w/e) off on the amp .. I had it on and turned up when setting the 38.7 volts ..

but the weird part is it says something about readjusting the imput level when you switch the bass control back on

At least you got a manual i been trying to adjust mine for a year now. I just do it off of what i think is good to me and use songs/ or kinda music i listen to get it to were it hits most of all the beats.

Your suppose to use a dimm(digital multimeter) to adjust your amp some say its not needed. Dont ever adjust your gains above 3/4

you can download all the manuals off of JL's website that tell you the suggested settings and what everything does

I did use a multimeter .. I screwed it into where the speaker wires go just like the instructions say and got exactly 38.7 volts when playing a 45hz tone

........................

I got everything figured out this morning and all my trim pieces back on

it was just late last night ..

I turned the bass eq "OFF" .. I had it turned on and all the way up last night

turned the volume to 75% which is 23 or so .. had it at almost full volume last night

then re adjusted the volts .. had to turn it up a good ways to 38.7 whilst playing the 45hz tone

...........................

now I switched the bass eq / control **** back on after adjusting

sub sounds nice with the sub control turned all the way down now .. and then gets louder as I turn it up ..

love this sub so far .. it isnt broken in yet but I can already tell it hits really nice and clean compared to some of my friends systems

just so much clearer .. well worth every penny

I'm gonna go run to the auto parts store and get a bigger ground cable for the battery

I was surprised how tiny it is (gauge wise) compared to all the positive wires coming off the battery

Yeah that might be a good idea to match gauge with the power and ground.

What kind of deck are you using? Normally it'd be better to do it by ear, turn it up till you hear distortion at the decks full volume you'd listen at. After you hear the distortion turn it down a bit and you should be good to go.

I'm using the stock bose system ..

just wanted more bass .. everything else seemed fine to me

actually sounds pretty good now with the JL sub added .. doesnt overpower the speakers at all and the sub turns up alot more than I'll ever listen to it at

went and got a heavy duty battery terminal and two 4 gauge ground wires (terminals on both ends)

the stock ground cable is held on by two 10mm bolts .. cleaned the paint off in the two spots the cables will attach then bolted on the two new cables with the 10mm bolts and a washer

then just bolted both 4 gauge cables to the new battery terminal (had two bolts

it sounds now like the sub is slightly louder and beats better .. guess its not fighting for a ground now with everything else in the car

but the car should have plenty of ground now .. that stock wire just looks tiny

I'll get pictures later of my new ground wire ..was really easy, cheap and quick .. looks good too
