Default 2003 Stock navigation. I want out!

Hello,

Does anyone know if Its easy to take the navigation out of your car? As in is it a easy swap to go non navigation? I know I will have to buy the cubby. Anything else? Any info would be nice.

I think it would be fairly easy. The actual cubby is attached with 4 screws so pull the screen out and attach the cubby. You would need the blank panel to replace the navi controls and disconnect the nav harness from your Bose and tuck all the wires. I'm sure there's more to it but it's a start.

I haven’t heard of anyone doing this, but it should be relatively simple. You will need a 2003 cubby and the finishing plate that fits the bottom border.

Just curious…Why do you want to remove your car’s stock navigation? Is it not working? Are you planning to replace this with an aftermarket navigation device?

Probably because it sucks and it's outdated

I have a 2003 Track with navigation. It has a cubby door, but you cant close it. There isent anywhere for the cubby to hook on to it. I made a thread but not much info.

I want to put a after market double din with navi in it. So I think it would look retarded if I had two screens on top of eachother. IMO it will look to much. The navigation works, nothings wrong with it. I just dont want two screens on.

I agree. The stock navigation in the 2003 350Z is an OEM Xanavi device (Xanavi is Clarion’s GPS division). This unit is DVD-based, and is slower and less reliable than the flash drive navigation devices available in the aftermarket.

Another disadvantage is that Xanavi’s application software isn’t as good as the software in some aftermarket units, and it’s very expen$ive to update the software and map database since this requires purchasing a new DVD from Nissan.

However, the Xanavi LCD monitor is excellent. I believe it is an RGB monitor that is even appropriately used with a CarPC. The display is superior to a NTSC/PAL monitor.

If I had this quality monitor in my car, I certainly would not choose removing it. Instead I would get the wiring diagram and determine how to connect a better navigation device, DVD player, or any component that outputs video (maybe a CarPC for that matter).

My point is it’s never wise to throw away quality stuff and replace this with lesser equipment.

Yes, I concur....IMO pulling the screen because the OP doesn't want "two screens" is silly. Just leave it off when the double din screen is on. No one will notice or give a rat's @$$.

OK… I get it… but allow me to offer some additional comments.

I don’t think the stacked LCD screens in a 350Z look retarded. That’s especially true if the two different screens provide unique functions (and it’s certainly alright to devise a setup that duplicates function).

What looks retarded is an empty upper/forward cubby that doesn’t provide any function. It’s too small and not deep enough for decent storage; and a quality H/U eliminates any need to mount an iPod, removable GPS, or just about any other device in the upper/forward cubby.

Here are some examples making two screens very useful and valid:
  • GPS Function: The problem with GPS screens and the display is you have a narrow view of your route. Better software automatically toggles between the two views. But, it is just great to have two views at once (the street level turn-by-turn view on the upper monitor and the expanded map view on the lower monitor). It’s just neat and practical.
  • Shared functions across two screens: With two screens you can display a compass, trip statistics, speedometer, etc. on one screen; and use the other screen to show your map, iPod, Satellite Radio, DVD player output, or whatever.
I think your prejudice for two screens in unfounded. If it's just a repair issue, this is feasily fixed.

Instead of starting a new thread I'm thinking that my questions can be answered here...

I'm in the market for an '08 Touring or Grand Touring and if I find one that does not have the navigation system...I'm guessing that the wiring harness is already there to install the stock nav system and it's just a matter of removing the cuddy and installing the unit...aye?

Thanks

Nope. If you buy one w/out navigation, buy an aftermarket one.

Noooo!!

There are many threads here that explain exactly why you cannot do this, and why you do not want to do this.

AdvanZ33 provides the correct answer:

In fact, you should avoid buying a Z with the factory navigation since you can get a far superior solution for much less $$ if you go aftermarket.
