Default radar detector

i was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions and clear up some stuff about radar detectors. i wanna get a cobra radar detector but i don't know if it is reliable, accurate, and if i have to plug it up into the lighter in order for me to use it. do you guys have any suggestions about a reasonable price for a radar detector that is dependable and that i don't to plug it up into the lighter. thanks

Escort makes the cordless Solo, no wires at all.

i only have one question concerning the V1. does the lighter adapter cord ever get into your way when your driving because the lighter adapter plug is towards the back of the car. i also wanna ask you guys what you think about the cobra radars. do you guys think they are any good?

Cobra sucks. Go with Valentine 1 or Escort.

Escort 8500 is rated better by several independant testing companies plus it's smaller in size and cheaper. Spend $30 and get your local stereo shop to hard wire it into your mirror power if you have it available.

Valentine 1 gets my vote... they run about $400 ($300 or so on Ebay) and can be purchased directly from www.valentine1.com Valentine provides great support and reasonable firmware upgrades, and this detector will last a lifetime--its well built, and can be upgraded.

This detector rates higher than anything else available in ALL detection categories...mine has saved me several times (10+)...I rely on it all the time. The Escort 8500 is your next best option, and it rates well too, but it is not as well respected as the V1 is in the Z community or in these forums--do a search on valentine and see.

Here is my thread on my stealth V1 install:

Don't settle for the Cobra, you will be disappointed...

Don't forget the V1 comes with the wires needed to hard wire it into your car. No worries about plugging it in to the cig lighter, and you don't have to spend any extra money to get some kind of adapter.

Bel 985 is a nice radar detector. Maybe not fully up to par with the valentine 1, but pretty close. The best feature is that it talks! You can just run a long cigarette lighter wire through the panels to the back. Thats what i did. The bel 985 comes with a short curly wire and a long one as well.

Default Passport 8500

If money is a concern (as it was in my case), go with the passport 8500. You can make your own "hardwire kit" using a regular old phone cord. I just got my new mount for the rear-view mirror and will post some pics tonight when I get home. It looks GOOOOOOOD!!

If money is NOT a concern, get a Valentine-1 immediately.

Valentine 1, Without a Doubt the Best Radar Detector. For 100 less you can have the Passport 8500 though, which will save you 100 for the tickets you'll get with it.

Seriously, I had both, the V1 has better range, sensitivity, etc... Come with the hardwire stuff, has the LOCATOR, which is infinitely better than a bunch of beeping crap. Bogey Counter so you won't miss one threat after you pass another.

Just save and get the V1.

The Bogey counter is a Valentiine One only feature, and it is by far one of the coolest features I have ever had on a detector. My V1 has never missed one single bogey....

That's not "technically" true. My Passport 8500 also can list multiple bogeys, just not as many as the V-1.

On a side note, I feel that both the Passport and V-1 are equally fine at detecting things, but the directional arrows make the V-1 MUCH better (wish I had one). I have tried both and they both alert more to automatic doors and other "non-threat" type things than they do to real threats. I think that in the few months I've had the passport, it has only alerted me to 2 police cars. Every other time you never know what's setting it off. This is also true for the V-1 as well though. They should change the name of Radar Detectors to "Grocery Store Detectors" cause I can't pass one without my detector going ape$hit.
