Alpine iXA-W404

I’ve only had a brief look at this H/U, so my comments are limited… but hopefully, accurate.
The significant disappointment was the touch-screen function which seems to work erratically. Sometimes pressing on a screen” button” works, and sometimes it doesn’t. The problem is mitigated by the fact that most functions can also be accomplished by pressing physical buttons on the device. That failure on an Alpine product is not something you expect since Alpine has consistently been a leader in reliable touch-screen function. I have no explanation for this problem with the iXA-W404.
I’ve read reviews complaining about a confusing interface, but I disagree. The device has an esoteric interface, but once you learn the features and functions, you appreciate its blazing speed.
In summary:

In summary:
- If your main concern is reliable touch-screen function, this may not be the best H/U.
- If you want fast operation, almost instant searches, and a wide range of device support, you will like this H/U.

Thanks for chiming in Spike!...
I also read that the touchscreen wasn't that reliable, but what I was more interested in, was the expandability of the unit... Also, I never use cd's anymore... I only use my ipod and occasionally a usb thumb drive... Not to mention, I'm going to be installing a back-up camera soon, so the screen will help out a great deal!...

^^ You are correct. CD/DVD players are becoming obsolete in mobile units… replaced by digital media (iPod, USB, SD’s).
I’m in the process of replacing my 5 year-old Clarion single-din H/U. I’m going with one of the new Kenwood digital single-din H/U’s.
