Default Basic stereo upgrade Need help

My friend has an 03 with the Bose system in it. She is having the issue with the sub cutting in and out. I have read that the amp for the sub causes this. There was even a recall about it. However, she wants to upgrade her system, nothing radical. She wants a double din touchscreen, and a nice subwoofer that will fit the stock location.

My questions are:

What size of woofer will fit the stock location? I know depth might be an issue here since the stock one is quite "thin".
will it need a separate amp?
Can I fit a 7" touch screen?

what is the scoshe adapter? Where can I find one? I know the stock speakers have their own amp. Does this mean that if I install new speakers I must run new wiring to them??

And how about those e-bay stereo units with touch screen? They seem pretty nice some even come with built in GPS.

From personal experience on two different cars (350z and G35) buying that scosche adapter is a complete waste of money. All it is for is level matching but can really hamper the sound quality. Now thats if you are leaving the speakers alone, If you are changing them and the radio you will want to bypass the amp.

Concerning the double dins, stick with name brand, the no name units are cheap for a reason and only as good as their warrenty. I wouldnt waste my money on the Alpine, it cost to much, is the biggest pain to wire up, looks outdated compared to others. I get Alpine, Pioneer, and Kenwood units all at cost and wouldnt even consider it even though I use to love Alpine.

Depth for the sub is not an issue in the stock location but chances are its not going to sound that great. I remember putting a sub in the stock location back in 03-04ish and far as I remember it sounded decent but when I did it on my wifes car it sounded worse than stock.

Alpine is great and why would you say you need that extra components? All you need is a video bypass for the parking brake the 900 has built in gps and if you decide to get BT you can have that as well.

Kenwood is my second choice but they do not have a 7 inch model that I have seen.

You still dont "need" the adapter, if anything alot of the indash models have volume offsets that do the same thing as the adapter. Its alot cheaper to try it without it first, your not going to mess anything up.

Kenwood and Pioneer have 7inch models, less wiring, easier to bypass, and look better. Alpines quality has leveled off over the last few years, its not bad just not worth the premium anymore.

I'm kind of interested in doing the same thing, I want to keep the stock head unit, and just replace the subwoofer and the amp powering the subwoofer. Is it possible to just 'swap' the two in? I'm especially only really asking about the amplifier. What gauge wire does the stock bose subwoofer amplifier use?
