Default upgrading headunit in my 07 Z.

Hey guys!

I had my Z for about 6 months now and it's time to upgrade the headunit. I am most likely buying a pioneer f7010bt (same as f700bt) within two weeks. - getting a good deal from a local guy.

I already ordered this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWNX%3AIT

How will the stock speakers sound with the 22watts rms from the new headunit? I'm thinking about upgrading the front speakers also but without using an amp (so I can just plug and play without mounting an amp).... what are some good front speakers for around $50 to $75.

My plan is to buy a 4ch amp later on and run the two front speakers and a sub. - but this is wayyyy down the line when I have some extra money.

any tips, things to look out for, or other info about the headunit, install, or anything?

also any info/tips on sound proofing?

save your money, don't waste your $75 on cheap speakers you won't be happy with - save enought to buy some quality components for the doors, and a decent amp.

honestly I don't think I would be able to tell the difference between moderately upgraded speakers and "really good ones" anyway. see if you can listen to the speakers in person. if they sound good enough to you isn't that what matters

Hi… You are wise to replace the front door speakers (I’m assuming you have the OEM Clarion speakers in your car). Just about any speaker you install will sound much better than the stock Clarion in the front door.

The stock Clarion has a paper cone, sounds awful, and is pretty much junk.

I don’t know the amount you want to spend, so here are some choices:

Infinity Reference 6032si ($80.00)
6-3/4" shallow-mount 2-way car speakers — for 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" openings
Comment: This is coaxial speaker (not a component speaker), but it sounds very good.

Alpine SPS-600C ($150.00)
Type-S 6-3/4" component speaker system — fits in 6-1/2" or 6-3/4" openings
Comment: This is a component speaker that delivers very good sound.

Focal Polyglass 130 VRS ($650.00)
Shallow-mount 5-1/4" component speaker system
Comment: This speaker sounds great and delivers very good bass. You won’t hear its great sound until you install your external amp.

My Advice:
Since you are not installing an external amp, go with the Infinity Reference 6032si two-way coaxial speakers in the front door for now. These speakers fit your budget and will work well with the internal amp in your new H/U, and they will provide noticeably better sound than your stock Clarion speakers. Use the fader in your H/U to mute the stock rear speakers (they are so bad that they will only pollute the better sound from your front replacement speakers).

When you install the external amp, you can move the Infinity Reference 6032si two-way coaxial speakers to the rear position, and mount better component speakers in the front door. That way you don’t waste the speakers you buy now for the front.

wow sweet!!! thanks for that great write up!

I will look into the infinity speakers. I think I'm meeting up the guy today to buy the headunit - hopefully the dash kit/wiring harness are already delivered to my parents house.

^^ That shouldn't be an obstacle. There are many H/U's to choose from, especially in this economy where discounts are common and large.

Just curious... What is the $$ amount are you planning to spend on a H/U?

^^ You might want to consider one of the Kenwood H/U’s that doesn’t have built in navigation, but supports adding this feature (navigation) using the KNA-G610 Navigation Box.

I ‘m suggesting this approach since it might fit your budget. And, the Kenwood Navigation BlackBox is easily mounted in the small rear cubby behind the driver’s seat. I prefer a modular setup since you can replace devices without sacrificing the H/U, and a single problem does not “take-down” your H/U.
