Default Rear speaker pod size ?? 2003

Hey guys, just got a new z and haven't worked on my system yet as I have been focusing on my performance/maintenance for the past month I've had it. Installed a new Kenwood head unit I'm happy with as it syncs beautifully with my iPhone.

Long story short, I'm looking to install new speakers as the previous owners setup was gruesome, I'm thinking of going with components for the doors and rear mids. I've already read a post in regards to the tiny pod size of the doors (that's fine I'll go with small components, but I really want to put some 6.5 mids with larger magnents behind the seats. My last audio setup in my Audi a6 required me to cut all of the pods since none of the mids fit in the doors.

Just wondering would the Z save me a huge headache and allow me to purchase some bigger magnets. Lol

Also I'm interested in what speaker setup you guys are running as well. Thanks in advance.

the rear speakers are the same size as fronts (6.5). The hump that the rear speakers sit in have quite a bit of room but fact is most try to delete the rears alltogether. I upgraded my rears but ended up fading everything to the front (virtually eliminating them). sounds better to me. the fronts can fit most components on the market except you would need a spacer ( some use a cutout stock speaker as spacer, others make or buy about 1inch wood ring spacers). the reason is to avoid hitting the window (glass). you can also go with speaker pods for more room and better sound.

I follow, but I don't exactly see the point of eliminating 2 speakers from a 4 speaker system. If anything I'm trying to add my mids in the rear to take pressure off of my fronts and to drive my vocals. Just wondering, without spacers or any other spacing technique, if the little additional space in the back is enough to fit some of the bigger magnets as opposed to the size that would fit in the doors. I'm assuming now that they might be since you stated there's quite a bit of room behind them, so thanks. I'll probably try to pull one out and measure when I get time.

Thanks

to get a better idea, just pull out one of your little storage pockets and peep through the cavities. you can see clearly the deph. just open the cover, pust it up with your palm and at the same time pull foward.
you will soon find out that the rear speaker delete is a widely discussed topic here. at the end of it all it comes to preference. that is why i said "it sounds better to me". The nature of the Z carbin is a factor. I spent extra money to upgrade them because at the time i was thinking along the same line as you are. the fact that i silenced them means i "prefer" the sound without them.

As @beezee mentions, you have room for deep 6.5” speakers in the rear slots. Some owners prefer additional fill and keep the rear speakers; others feel that the rears are too close to the listener and defeat sound staging. It’s really personal preference.

If you do decide to keep the rears, you must do as you are planning and replace these speakers. The OEM speakers are low quality and pollute the sound.

Totally understand, I am an alien from a planet of large luxury sedans, where there's room to add speakers everywhere lol.

This is my first coupe by I can defenitely understand what you are saying about the cabin size and depth and how the position of the speaker can hinder the sound to some people.

Thanks for the heads up guys, I think I know what I'll be going with. I'll defenietly post updates when she's done.
