Default Another sub in stock location thread!

Ok, first off, I've never done anything with systems in my life. I can install aftermarket headunits, or replace the rear speakers, but don't know anything about subs. I'm looking to add just a 8" sub in the stock location. I don't need tons of base, just want a little extra. I mostly listen to punk, metal, ska and some hip hop. The most I'll be bumpin is the Beastie Boys. For what I'm looking for, would it be ok to get a 8" Kicker (maybe a 10CVR84) and mount it in the stock location? I'm assuming I'll need an amp as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched through the first 12 pages and it seems like most people asking to put it in the stock location are looking for some serious bass.
My first Z had a sub in there and it was non Bose. Previous owner had it in there and I could never find an amp. Really wish I would have paid attention to that setup. Thanks for any help.

see if you can find a free air sub, they dont require a box. you would just need a mounting plate. find a small amp and get a line level to rca adapter and tap into the wires in the back by the spare tire, and you can prob put the amp in that area also.

Thanks for the replies. Not really looking to add a box in there though.

Would it be possible to dynamat it really good or put something else in there and just mount one in the factory bracket? It probably wouldn't be possible to put the amp in there as well? Just looking to save as much space as possible.

Put the sub in a properly built/sized box, or don't bother. Anything mounted in "free-air" will likely sound worse than nothing.

there are free air subs that dont require a box, a simple google search would have informed you of that

if you want window rattling bass, then they are not for you. if you want subtle little more than stock it would be okay (the stock bose is free air btw)... i was just giving him options. he stated that he doesnt want a box, so the free air is the only real option he has. me personally i am over the loud stereo phase, and have had too many cars broken into for the stereo

Thanks for the input. I was unaware that the Bose speaker was free air. Probably what was in my previous Z.

Here's what I did in my '08"

All hidden behind a de-badged OEM Bose grill:

Behind the grill:

Box built of 3/4" MDF with 10" JL:

Sub amp in glove box, 4-channel amp below glove box (obviously not visible):

There's a Kenwood DDX-470 in the dash, and the 4 main speakers are Boston separates.

That's a real nice looking setup. I think I'll have to end up doing something like that. Thanks.

Stealth was one of my requirements, but it also had to sound good, which I think it does. Not going to win any loudness contests, but it's a nice, accurate-sounding system, and total cost was only ~$1500.
