Default What radar detector do you use?

Just curious what if any radar detector do you use? Speeding tickets are really over rated.

From what I have been reading nothing will pick up lidar. Is that correct? If so is it even worth buying a radar detector?

A jammer is the only real defense against LIDAR.

Crowd-sourced "spot the cop" apps like Waze work too, but someone has to be the first to spot, and then report, the LEO.

I run a 9500ix in my work vehicle and I run a V1+STi-R+ZR3 jammer in my Z. (and I run Waze most of the time too.)

Our family Magnum RT runs an SRX

And I have a spare S7 X50 I sometimes use.

Both the SRX and ZR3 are out-dated now, but they still work on most guns.

I don't run anything. If you get pulled over and a cop sees you have a radar detector you're much more likely to get a ticket instead of a warning.

The best and cheapest option is don't speed. No money wasted on a radar detector and no speeding tickets.

I half agree with you and half disagree...

no radar detector will save you if you are doing ~20+ mph over in any speed zone...cops werent born yesterday...but the best way to not get a ticket is to not get pulled over and a detector will (IMO) give you enough warning for 80% of traffic cops...

With that being said I have a beltronic RX65 - I'm pretty happy with it...it's saved my *** a more times that I'd like to admit -

it's nice to have a radar detector that you can hide. they don't have to be out in the open. these laser/radar detectors look pretty legit. $550.

Some can be hidden pretty well:

In most cases the cars that you pass while speeding end up catching up with you at the next traffic light.

Good point.

But it's also the least fun.

I do think if a cop sees you have a detector, or sees you trying to pull it off the windshield as he is pulling you over, you are much more likely to get a ticket.

I have remote detectors mounted in 3 of our 4 vehicles.

Much more expensive, especially if you have a shop do the install, but they work well, and (knock on wood), I haven't gotten a ticket in well over a decade....

I have an Escort SRX in my Nismo (you can see the control in my cubby in my stereo install thread)

My wife's car has the Bel version of the same detector (almost identical price and features, and I believe they were made by the same factory).

My E63 has a Passport Qi45.

Been happy with all of them.

It seems that there are less options for remote detectors nowadays, though.

Would be interested in any forum members have more current remote detectors they would recommend.

Pretty much my sentiments exactly.

All of the above, plus a bit of situational awareness.

ie - lookout for areas that are frequent speed traps, underpasses and around curves on or at the base of hills, etc.

Especially using the factory gauge pod. I would be way too nervous of botching the job in such a visible location.

Most radar detectors can detect laser, but by the time you're hit the detection is useless. Check what your local police/state police use, then buy a quality detector/jammer and leave the bands they use on. For a RD, i'd recommend looking at the Escort Redline/9500ix or the Valentine One.

Assuming you're in CA, jammers are illegal. http://www.rdforum.org/wiki/index.ph...y_-_California

I swear by my V1. My previous detectors were Escort and Cobra, and neither competed with the V1. To the defense of the Escort, it was an outdated version. But the Cobra was a big waste of money. Literally went off so much that I ignored it.

I think the only 2 ways to go is either V1 or Escort. I can tell you from personal experience, the V1 is amazing. It has saved me so many times and has more than paid for itself.

I just cut the needle below where it could be seen and used electrical tape to "black out" back of the meter. The car/computer probably still thinks it's displaying voltage.

That is correct they can pick up lidar the issue as statedis once you're zapped it's to late. I don't speed around town. But I do speed on long trips typically 15mph over or so. So I think a detector will work fine for my needs. I'll just have to keep in mind if I'm not with a group of cars that I need to slow it down.

V1 has given me the least amount of issues and works very well, not to mention informative. I've had Bel RX65 Pro and the Escort Passport 8500 x50, both of which ended up throwing calibration codes becoming useless after a few years in service.

Why? There is no point in doing that. It kills your MPG and you can get expensive speeding tickets. Lots of places will class that at reckless driving.

If I'm going out of town or on a road trip I typically set the cruise on 65 and let it go. Coming back from Arkansas one night I got 32.5mpg in my Z. Sure I was going under the speed limit on 40 but there is another lane they can use to go around if they don't like it.

It's boring going slow. But that's just some people's opinions. Obviously the people on this thread speed, or they wouldn't be asking about radar/laser detectors.

"Speeding" used to be fun to me. Then I started tracking the car, and now violating an arbitrary number on a sign doesn't provide me with any entertainment.

I'm not saying I never speed, but getting someplace a little sooner for no particular reason just doesn't do anything for me now. (So I usually don't)

People need to learn to slow down a little and enjoy life. Reducing speed not only makes your trip safer, you burn less fuel (saving money), you have more time to take in the scenery and it is relaxing/stress relieving.

I'm not saying I never speed. I like to go fast the same as everyone. I just do it where I don't have to worry about people/cops.
