Here's what I installed myself:

- Alpine 9813 HU using circuit city wiring harneses (no splicing at all)
- Metra Kit to put into dash
- 4 Infiniti Kappa 6-1/2 inch 2-way speakers
- Infinity Basslink 10" powered sub using a Lightning Audio 10 guage amp wiring kit.

For the basslink:
- I ran the 10 guage wire from the battery down the passenger side of the car to the sub in the rear passenger corner of the hatch.

- The ground goes to an existing hole with threads between the rear speaker assembly and the strut bar. I used a screw to fit right into the existing hole.

- The HU has RCA low level output for the SUB also running down the same passenger side of the car

- the remote on wire also goes down the passenger side of the car to the HU remote on wire.

That's IT, but I get an alternator whining sound sporadically. I don't notice it 100% of the time.

ALso, today, I noticed it when I turned on the A/C and when I turned it off it seemed to go away. Although later in the day when I turned on the A/C, it wasn't there that I could tell.

Anybody have any ideas?? Anybody with some expert knowledge?........Bueller?

I have no idea what do do...

 

like when you turn on the A/C you can hear the alternator? does your car also shake a little or the rpms become unstable?

 

I can hear the alternator whine through the speakers. It's like an annoying underlying noise via the speakers.

 

Here's my guess:

1.) Separate the signal (RCA) and power cables; like, run the power cables along the passenger side doorsill and the signals along the transmission tunnel. Mine was installed like this and it has zero noise.

2.) Your basslink ground may not be the best and could be a ground loop. There's a couple nice bolts inside the sub area on the wall near the seat belt. Use those. Also, sand a bit of the paint off around the bolt so that the wire is in contact with bare metal.

The only weird thing is that I've been driving around now with the A/C off and it has been 100% fine. For some reason, I'm thinking the noise only appears when I have the A/C turned on and not all the time at that!!

I agree, this was a problem for me in my other car.


And also try to shorten the length of your ground wire and placing it some were else. You would be surprised a different location might just get rid of the noise. good luck.

 

wait, are you hearing the whining through the sub? or the speakers?

do u have an amp running the speakers?

if u do not have an amp on the speakers and the sound is coming from the speakers, then the problem lies in the head unit.

but if you do have an amp on the speakers then:

good suggestions so far, also try higher quality shielded rca cables and scrape the paint off the area the ground wire is connected to.

 

Power wires and RCA's are supposed to be a minimum of 18 inches apart.

 

run power and rca seperately

wrap the rca's in aluminum foil.... looks ghetto but it works

make sure you have a proper ground the the chasis on bare metal. It it is on something that is clear-coated or painted it is not a good ground. Maybe try a ground block or run another ground wire

 

Noise filters. It whinning when the AC is on because you are drawing more current.
