New System?
Hey Gang,
After viewing the transformation of my friends Z into a sound blasting system I am interested in changing mine. However, I am not planning to go to the extreme. Something simple and affordable. Can anyone share their thoughts?
I was thinking to change the head unit, not sure on the sub (may be a 12" Bazooka), amp and some speakers. Like I said something sweet. I want the deep bass but not earth scattering. Please let me know.
Thanks

I think you could do a nice economy system for around $800-$1k. Here is what I would suggest...
1. Head Unit--get one with Cd changer controls and XM, in case you ever want to upgrade. Get hi-volt outputs (4v min), our Z's are very noisy beings. Make sure the head unit puts out 40-50 watts per channel (4 channels total). Also, be sure your head unit has a pre-out for a subwoofer. I know my Premier 840 has a subwoofer output, and it is adjustable. I would suggest Alpine or Pioneer Premier for a head unit. I avoid Sony due to past experiences...$300-400
2. Upgrade all existing speakers. I would get a decent set of seperates for the front, 6.5" in the door and 3/4 or 1" tweeters in the stock tweet locations. Look for something that sounds good to you. I prefer Boston Acoustics, JL Audio, MB Quart. There are otrhers too, look in these forums for other ideas. Get a basic set of 6.5" coaxs for the rear, nothing extravegant. Pay about $200-250 for the fronts, and $75 for the rears.
3. Get a bazooka, with built in amp. This will be easy to hook up. Be sure it sounds good to your ear. It will sound different in the car. I think they make 8" and 10" models...I am not a big fan of bazooka stuff, but if you like it then that is what counts. Look to pay $300+ for this.
Do the work yourself, or find a buddy that can help you out. A stereo shop will charge $200+ for this type of install, so you can save yourslef some money that way. The above is a good starting point for just about any vehicle, but I think proper setup and adjustemnt of the above can sound good in any vehicle and great in our Z's...
Good luck.

forget the bazooka bass tube and check out the infinity basslink. they should be around the same price, i think.
i'm not sure how much you want to spend but in addition to adding something like the basslink (or bazooka bass tube),
you should get a headunit (should not skimp on quality as this is a very important part of the system),
a set of components for the front (disconnect the rears or just fade sound to front so the rears play minimally)
and get an amp for the component speakers.
If you do the work yourself, it can easily be done for a very decent price. And doing the work gives you nice bonding time with the car too!
