Default Speaker Upgrade

I am new at this, but from what I have read the stock speakers/head unit(non-bose) is junk. Anyone have good ideas for replacements?

I have the Boston RC620's on a JVC head unit and it is 1000x more clear and 1000x louder. These component speakers scream!

Question

Thank you for the feedback I have heard great things about the Boston Speakers. Out of curiosity do you know what the speaker count is? I think it is six, and what are the sizes. Finally any thoughts on where to buy. I have looked at crutchfield, but I was not sure about their prices.

Are those Bostons in the rear or just in the front location? I just tried to install new rear speakers and it was a no go. As with everything else, the 6 1/2 speakers I got wont work. I can get 1 hole to line up and that is all.

yes they are junk! depending how much you want to spend there are lots of option on what you can replace and with what. I replaced my headunit with a pioneer premier 940mp and my components with infinity kappa perfect 6.1's, which are powered of a jl 300/4 amp, for my mids and highs. Sounds soooo sooo sooo much better than stock.

the speaker size up front and in the rear is 6.5 inches. the tweeters are about .75inch but you can put a larger tweeter in there.

i'm not sure how installing new rear speakers works,
but if you're trying to install new speakers in the doors and having difficulty with holes aligning don't even worry about that. you are going to have to get a 1 inch spacer so the speaker basket doesn't get in the way of the window rolling down. You can then just drill holes wherever you need to in the spacer to fit the speakers.

If you are going to get a good set of components (compoenets are a midrange/tweet/crossover combo) then all you need is your speakers up front. Rears aren't needed at all. They actually make it sound worse. The size up front is 6 and 1/2 - If you have a limited budget, get some infiniti components up front. If you can afford a little more, get some mbquarts, if you can really spend for the best, then it's all about FOCAL. As for your head unit (radio). Honestly anything is better than the stock crap that came with the car. I have a Kenwood but there are many good brands (i.e eclipse, apline, panasonic, sony, ect). Crutchfield is expensive from what I see. Shop around.

Yeah, I've already been down the front speaker road and for the spacer I gutted the stock speaker and used it as a spacer. It felt good to take out some agression. The only bad part is that I only did one side and the speakers I put in there are actually comming out so I can put in my new ones. PolkMOMO MM6 components. I'm sure that people are asking "Dam Jeff, why all this Polk stuff?" well it is simple economics. I just quit working at Circuit City and before I went I took advantage of the employee discount Now I know that CC sells Alpine and everything, but to get the really good discounts you have to use what is called "accomodation" where we order directly from the manufacturer at around 65% discount. My original set up from Crutchfield would have run me $1215 after there discounts and free shipping. I got everything for $540 Shipped I knew working there would really pay off some time. I ended up getting 2 more amps from them because the original one (560RMS) wasnt going to be enough for the subs I never would have thought that 560 would not be enough for 2 12's. So now each one will get around 550RMS. As fir the stealth install I dont think that it will totally be able to happen because I measured wrong and the amps are too big for the intended location. I wish there was a smile for smacking myself in the head and a DOH appearing because that is how I feel. I can say this though. It is amazing how much road noise comes from the floorboard. OK, I'm done now.
Sorry for the lenght,
BSZ

What is the best size amp to use. 3 or 4? I guess what I am looking to do is replace front and rear speakers and the hu, and I am hoping that will improve the sound, if not I can just listen to the exhaust!

I notice a lot of people saying that the rear speakers should just be tossed out and that the sound is better without them. Boston has a 6.53 set of speakers with 4" mids. Will these fit in the back and does anyone know if these will make the sound worse than just having the 6.5 Boston's and tweets?

You could save a bunch of money without those rears.

Big Sexz,
Boston speakers fit fine with the adjustments made in stock places...stock doors and rear replaced with Bostons.
EasyZ
As to which speaker sounds best, gues it si just a matter of opinion because I could have bought the Mb quartz for less. After listening to both at HI-fi buys, I chose the Bostons. Sound is in the ear of the beholder so that is a choice everyone should make on their own.
Whchever aftermarket speaker you choose it is going to sound much better than stock.Good luck
