Default Possible to build a good system for under $1000?

Is it possible? Sorry for such newbish question, I'm new in this arena. It doesn't need to be all boomy and stuff. I'm not trying to wake up the neighborhood.

Mike, if you do the work yourself, yes, you can get there for a G.

If you have the componets installed, no, a G won't do it.
