Question about aftermarket NAVIGATION
I did a search
I was reading about different aftermarket units.
When you buy a aftermarket do you have to buy the DVD NAV unit for $1500 and the a screen for another $1k-$2k?
Also how does it compare to a factory unit like does it have points of interest where it will list like restaurants, gas stations with the phone numbers and stuff??
Any recommendations also appreciated.
Thank you for any help or info.

Zand02max,
Thaks a lot man I really appreciate it.
Got some questions for you.
1. I was on the kenwood site and it seems like you have to pay $1500 for the dvd/nav player and another 1500 for a screen. Is the one you have a all in one package?
2. How does it compare to factory units like does it have points of interest where it will list like restaurants, gas stations with the phone numbers and stuff??
Do I need anything else for the radio to work with stock speakers ect.. or any other items I need to purcahse or is it turn key.
Thank you

Yes, its an all in one package.

Yes, it has those features also.

Nope, you might want to add a CD changer, but thats only if you want to program the NAV without the NAV DVD inserted. Cd changer helps so you don't have to take out the NAV disc to play a CD.
The only other option I would get with this unit is the voice recognition, an extra $49.00.
I purchased mine at www.etronics.com.
Thank you

Like zand02max, gps nav units do all of that. All gps units use satellite signals to determine your position, speed, etc. The units designed specifically for cars often also connect to the vehicle's speed sensor wire, and use internal gyroscopes. This helps the nav unit continue to track your progress even if you lose satellite reception. (Such as when you go into a tunnel, or are surrounded by tall buildings.)
Also, all car navigation units that I'm aware of provide point-of-interest information. (Gas stations, restaurants, etc.)
The only drawback to all-in-one units like the AVIC is that they only have one disc drive in them. So you insert the nav disc in order to plan a route and such, but then have to eject it if you want to put in a CD to listen to. The nav unit can run for a while without the nav disc inserted (depending on how far you drive), but eventually you'll have to eject your CD again and re-insert the nav disc in order for it to load new information. I imagine this probably happens the most on long road trips if you go far enough outside of your planned route.
On the other hand, I have an Alpine nav unit which is independent of my headunit. You insert the nav disc in the nav unit and leave it there. The drawback to this type of setup is that you need to buy a separate screen. I got an Alpine lcd screen, and mounted it in the factory location. (see the link in my sig for pics)
Either way, they all work great. I know that the Alpine and Pioneer nav units are good. Also, the Garmin Streetpilot dash-top units are very good. (Had one prior to my Alpine.) The Garmin units just sit on your dash and you can take them with you when you leave the car. Not as fancy looking as the permanent in-car installs, but much easier to deal with since you don't have to permanently install anything.

Can't comment on any other brands, as I haven't used them.

Basically, the gps satellites surrounding the Earth simply sit there and constantly transmit their location (along with the time of day and a few other bits of data). So, your gps receiver in your car just listens for all these satellite transmissions. Once your receiver locks on to 3 or more of these satellites, it can triangulate its own position.
No data ever gets transmitted from your gps receiver back out. It's all one-way, from the satellites down to your reciever. So, anyone anywhere on the planet can receive that satellite data and use gps receivers for free. You just have to buy a receiver. (aka: nav unit)
I would also recommend the Pioneer AVIC-N1. It's a very sweet unit. My only issue was this: - I previously purchased a Kenwood KDC-X969 head unit, and a Kenwood eXcelon KHD-CX910 Music Keg (and I didn't want to lose them). So I ran the Kenwood system into the auxilliary input of the AVIC-N1. Now I have the best of both worlds, and it all plays through the car speakers. When nav instructions come on, the unit automatically mutes the music the same as it would if I had a disk in the AVIC. You will not go wrong with this unit. You can also hook up a rear-view camera, which I had done.

Can you have split screens, with the camera and Nav on?
Also, can you check your settings, mine says my speed sensor is disconnected. And some of my displays don't work in the speed/clock/voltage area?
zand02max- I bought the Pioneer camera (model # nd-bc1). You can have the split screen you asked about. I'll include some pics. Let me apologize now, they are crappy, but you should get the general idea.
All of my functions work. Possibly, your speed sensor wire isn't connected (as you stated). I couldn't see what else could be wrong, if the unit is otherwise working perfectly. Also, about the cam- you can just have it on all the time and watch out the rear, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's for trailer monitoring. If these pics don't do it for you, - which I could definitely understand, I can take more later.
Thanks, yeah, when I got it installed, the installer had to ask me where the speed wire is. Like I am suppose to know or something. Anyway he guessed apparently and said he found it. The speed and Nav worked, so I assumed it was found due to everything working. I asked about the features that wouldn't work, and they didn't know.
Ia m taking it in to a different shop tomorrow at 0900. They are fixing my Nav Unit and replacing my carpet, hopefully.
The ***s drilled into my heater core, dumping my entire radiator into my drivers side floorboard. They said they cleaned it and got it professionally detailed, but its still there.
Last ?, where did you get your camera and who installed it? Cheapest place I can find is Crutchfield, and they want $249.

I got the camera (nd-bc1), the voice command pack (cd-vc1) and the AVIC-N1 for $1783 delivered to my doorstep. You can check out the company I got all my stuff from. The company's website is SBHCorp.com. My friend also dealt with them, no issues, good service. Oh,- the camera alone was $229
