does nav still work without the stock head unit

i wanted to add a aftermarket system to my car. i also got the factory navigation. I was wondering does the factory nav still work without the stock head unit.

yes, with no other modifications, the only audio it will have is the beeping. With further modifications (they are easy, but do a search here for them), and an external speaker, you can regain the voice feature.

in order for the audio part to work it will require some extra work. you will need a relay circuit to ground the aftermarket HU (to mute it) and an external speaker for the voice. onecoolee wrote up a great thread on how to do this
