Question - Alpine 9833
Guys,
I have a few questions in regards to Alpine 9833.
1) What is the sound quality of the cd player and mp3? Also tuner (FM)?
2) Do I need to run a direct power lead to the battery if I don’t use its amps? Can anybody elaborate on this? The reason is that I might be ordering this unit, but like to pre-wire my amps and sub first.
3) The face-plate can be removed? It says so on the description, but just want to make sure it has this feature.
4) Where can I get a wiring harness besides crutchfield’s site. What dash kit do you recommend? Any links?
5) Does it really a huge difference with an aftermarket HU? Anybody with a stock HU before/after (aftermarket unit) can comment on this?
The items I have right now are:
Phoenix Gold Octane-R 5.0:1
Phoenix Gold Octane-R 5.0:4
Infinity Sub 10.1d
Diamond audio m361i (rear)
Infinity Perfect (front) – on order
Dave’s engineering converters
cables/rca
Thanks,
Tony

I have that HU. I can answer some of your questions.
1) For CD's the SQ is excellent, MP3 depends on the quality of the rip. I have some MP3's that sound awesome some not so good.
2) Don't know.
3) Yes
4) Any place that sells Alpine. I've got Metra.
5) Yes. but only with better than stock speakers.

this is my take on it. never owned an alpine so take it for what it's worth.
Alpine HUs have a 1bit DAC. CDs will sound good, mp3s won't. the reason is their 1bit DAC. I've been told by other people that their higher HUs have 6 1bit DACs. not sure how that plays or sounds.
Clarion has a 24bit DAC. therefore, playing mp3s will sound a lot better compared to a 1bit DAC HU.

1->Sound quality is great for mp3 CD's and Audio CDs... never tried wma yet... FM quality i would say is average, i used to get better reception in my 2002 altima, probably cause the antenna on the Z isn't all that good i would presume since the stock HU also had bad FM pickup (local LA stations).
2->When i was installing my system, i tried connecting the Alpine without direct connection to the battery and it worked great, but I ultimately decided to connect it since I wasn't putting in another amp.
3->Comes with a neat little case to hold the faceplate too.
4->Get the metra, fits and looks the best. (am attaching a pic)
5->Definitely, anything is better than the stock POS
my cfg:-
alpine9833
infinity kappa components in front
infinity kappa's in rear
infinity basslink in area behind drivers seat

How do you hook it up directly to the battery? I'm new to this and I just got my 9833 and the cables and all. I plan on hooking it to the battery, but I don't know how. Is it complicated? Are there any pics? I've been searching.
Thanks

NeptuneZ, it's easy. Just connect the Yellow wire to a 12 gauge cable, and connect the 12 gauge cable to your battery. You can get a 12 gauge amp kit for dirt cheap at Walmart. There is a grommet behind the battery. Simply cut a small X at the bottom of that grommet and push the 12 gauge cable through it. The other end will come out from under the dash on the passenger side. From there, just run it behind the carpet up to the head unit.
The most difficult part is cutting that x in the grommet. You have to be careful you don't cut through the existing cables when cutting the grommet.
I'll try to take a pic of the grommet for you this weekend

Thanks, big time, cehome! I got the 12 guage ready to go I just didn't understand where it gets connected to the unit nor did I understand where it connects to the battery. People on the forum did not mention much about where the cable goes through the frame to get to the battery either. That made me feel stupid because it seemed like it was obvious to everyone else.
Those pictures would really help. Again, thanks a lot, good lookin' out and here from you soon.

As promised here are the pics of the grommet and my 12 gauge power cable routed through it.
Close view of the grommet and cable through it
Closer view
Wider view to give you an idea of where the grommet is located exactly

Just remove the battery cover and the plastic trims around that area. The plastics are held in with little rivets you just pop up. You'll also need to remove the long rubber seal that is attaced to the big plastic piece inorder to remove it. Hope that helps.
