My dad and I spent 3 days during Thankgiving break
getting the stereo installs done.

Currently:
Clarion DXZ825 (I avoid Alpines for a reason)
Sony XE-744 (Gapfiller/Eye candy)
Alpine Mono Amp (V12 was bad... sad day)
6.5" MB Quart (rear replacement)
6x9 MB Quart in box (in the trunk somewhere... no thoughts)
JL W3-D2 10" Sub (no see!)

Some MDF board, foam insulation spray, and lots
of Dynamat Extreme. (No pictures... bad sight)

 

Sorry for bad pix.. my friend just bought the camera
and did not know how to take advanage of its
features like disabling flash.

Almost forgot! Metra Car kit! Wasn't 100% flush, but
was perfect enough.

 

V12 was bad so we had to get a new one...

150x1 into 4 ohms is good enough. (sorry bout double post)

There is another small alpine amp hidden
underneath the covers. This amp used to power
the JL sub in my 200sx hatchback. Now it powers
the 6x9s.

Thats pretty much it. This intake was installed last week.
I have less than 50 miles to go, so I can't wait to
full throttle this car to hear how it sounds.

Unfortunately... we've got a big pile of snow.

 

I would have stayed brand specific with the head unit and EQ. Two different brands, in one dash, looks tacky, IMO.

 

Do you have any pics of what's behind door number 1?

Not to sound negative but i agree. I dont see why people would not get a double din or din and a half when the dash is made to fit it.

 

which sub did u fit in the stock compartment and how does it sound??

im using that xe-744 eq too.. but its just sitting here for now.. hwo much was that dash kit and where did u get it?

 

It would be nice if Clarion had a cool digital eq like the Sony.

Double-din would be nice, but I never found one that was
applealing. I don't like the fancy curves and epilepsy
causing flashy confusing displays. I also wanted an EQ with a
large display and very few protruding buttons. I like the simple bar display of the spectrum analyzer. I even thought about
building my own, but realized the complexity wasn't worth it.

I thought about filing the sony logo, but it doesn't bother
me at night and my I have lazy butt :-P .

I did not have a digital camera at the time, and was too
lazy to pry off the grill just to get snapshots of it.

http://www.audio-warehouse.com/ is where I purchased
the Metra kit for under $20. The audio harness adapter
is the Standard Nissan type from metra, and can be
purchased locally. Careful about the ground wire. There
isn't one in the factory car harness, so you will need to
connect the ground wires to something metal.

I found it strange that connecting the antenna plug would
turn power the stereo. I think theres some sort of grounding
there.

The sub is a 10" JL-W3 and WILL require modifications.
The stock sheetmetal cutout doesn't fit the speaker at all,
so we had to cut an MDF board to fit the opening and
removed the factory cutout plate.

The enclosure is sealed, and the sub is a little punchy.
The sound is strong, surrounds the cabin well, and there
is no vibration. Rearview mirror is a small concern when
you have music with strong punchy bass drum.

 

I know what you mean but you have to look harder. There are some hot ones out there. I have a DD and its freakin beautiful. My friend also got an amazing one but that was from Japan.

 

Was the sub enclosure custom?

Yup... mdf board to close up most of the large openings
and custom board for installing 10" driver.

stock cutout did not fit.... so we got rid of it.

I used dynamat to seal off crevices and covered
as much metal as I could including the MDF boards.

To fill up the gaps, I used poly foam insulation spray.
Two bottles of this stuff was enough to fill much of the
openings. I even sealed the gaps of the MDF board
with 10" sub mounted. Lastly, silicone seal the sub
to prevent air leakage.

Careful with the spray foam... it sucked when it got
on some things including my fingers. Very hard to wash!
It even ate some of the paint.... :-( but it was minor.

The sub was very tight, and there was hardly any
vibration and resonance coming out from the compartment.
The only thing that probably shook was the rearview mirror.

 

One last stupid question: Where is a good place to buy the MDF? Is this something I can get a Home Depot or Lowes? Or do I need a speciality stereo shop for this?

I don't really know, but you could always check.

The MDF board we got were extras from a friend.

 

where did you mount your amp at?

 

Glove compartment... there is a smaller one underneath
the plastic cover. It is snap in and easy to remove.

I never use it anyhow.

 

djtonium - What air filter system did you install. Is that the "Blitz" filter? Looks like a pretty clean set-up. Do you feel like you got much out of it???

Also do you have some pictures of the sub install without the cover?

 

mike, you can get MDF at home depot or lowes. get 3/4" thick.

djtonium, where did you run the power cable from the battery? is there and easy to get to existing hole thru the firewall or did you drill a new one?
