Good luck finding them in stores though, I had to look and look on Ebay for mine.
I personally think the CDA-7998 (amber ability) is too big, cost too much, and doesn't look right.
I spoke to Alpine and they said they are going to be releasing a line of Head Units that can change to whatever color you want, similar to other HU's that are out. When? How much? Who Knows?

Looks nice, but definetly NOT a custom dash. This is a custom dash:

You've inspired me. I didn't think my boston would fit in the back by thte tire, and was going to try and cram it, 2 amps, and 2 huge crossvers behind the seat someone, but I decided to take your approach. So, this weekend, I begain fiberglassing pods to put a 4" and tweet in the door location, 6" in the rollbar, and a fiberglass box in the back by the spare. Now, I plan on putting the amps and in the stock sub location. I still have along way to go, but will post pics when finished.
If you saw it in person, you wouldnt say that. That hu trim piece is NOT a custom dash. This also classifies:

this does too:

Again, I'm just showing what a TRUE custom dash is.

My opinion, to each his own.
Cheap???? It was completely hand built for pure sound quality, it is absolutely symmetrical. A custom dash would cost a few thousand dollars...and not just one or two. You have an interesting perspective, which I respect, but that is definetly not a cheap dash, and the person who started this thread may have a very nice din mount, but it is not a custom dash. It's kind of like those people who do the "$6 mod" to the front grill and say they have a custom front bumper...it's just not the same.
Gish,
Do you or your installer remember what you did to get the sub to fit? I checked out the trunk the other night and there is a trunk release cable and large wiring harness in the way. Plus there are these 3/4" long threaded studs sticking up out of the floor all over the place. There sure is alot of space back there but it will be extremely difficult to get the sub positioned just right so it looks like yours (no cutting of the interior pieces but still clear the tire and sitting down as low as you can get it). If you have any more details or advice I'd appreciate your input, like if anything was re-routed, if you cut off the studs and ground them down to the floor level, etc. I am starting to think a box firing up in the stock area would be SO much easier but I haven't given up yet seeing your pics again. I just couldn't get mine to line up right yet using a Boston pro 10.5LF without looking like I'd need to trim the carpeted piece in the corner.
thanks

Well, I went back and looked at this thread and the one Dissident started on the same thing and noticed that it really should fit without cutting up the interior. NOte how the picture shows the mounting ring right about where I have it (see below) and that the top of his box fits under the corner carpet/felt interior piece.
So I went back out to the garage and looked some more. I took the largest part of the speaker that has to fit, the mounting ring and placed it on top of the styrofoam, placed it up against the carpet/felt covered side wall and see with some creative curves to the enclosure it MAY clear the spare tire.
I then finally got more creative and found a way out if the tire gets in the way. I moved the tire over toward the passenger side and also toward the front of the car and it will bolt down through one of the stud holes instead of the center hole perfectly giving us more room! The styrofoam cap fits at the same height and the trunk floor still fits exactly the same.
Having this way "out" I am going to go through with this sometime after being reminded by many posts how much the stock location sucks in almost everyone's opinion. I know there are some nice ones out there and they probably sound great so no flames. I understand acoustics enough to know why this trunk mount would be even better depending on what you want.
I'm sure you have probably found lots of fibergalssing links. I've searched for weeks on this myself.
here are a couple of more for a good reason.
this one is one quick link leading to many more

this one is found in there and I think is great to find because this guy admits how much of a compromise you are possibly making to do fiberglass and explains some extra steps that will hopefully make the project a great sounding success...
I was intimidated by fiberglassing at first but after reading about it for hours I think I could do fine with a little practice. Same thing goes for the car. I was extremely frustrated looking at what I had to deal with but it looks do-able now. I am still glad I posted a reply cause hopfully someone will cough up a little more helpful info. I think I will locate the trunk release cable to the unused hold down studs over to the right of where they are now and cut and grind down any studs directly below the speaker to get this install almost flush with the trunk floor. I will just rustproof what I cut. They seem to only be for holding down cables to the floor.
I've got some pictures of when I had it all apart last week so PM me if you need some help or want to talk about this offline some more. There is alot more room towards the corner of the car for doing this if you keep the box top at the stock level. Then the speaker grille will be just a little above stock height. I'm running out to get fiberglass materials when I get back home and reveiw which kind of cloth to buy and start practicing on building something out of the car for now.
