What size of box did you use? (cubic feet) What are the dimensions of the box and also of the empty void? Thanks in advance.

 

The sound quality under the stock location is okay.
The bass sound using the W3 isn't too loud even
after adjusting it.

I still need to seal it off to reduce air leaks.

 

Great install skid. I'm going to be doing an install very similar to yours. I was curious about the dimensions/materials of the sub box as well. I know my installer can probably figure something out, but it doesnt hurt to have examples of something that works well.

 

Where did you get that custom cover for the subs? What kind of DVD player is that behind the seats? What head unit is there? Do you have any pics of the dash install? Thanks for the info, I am looking to do something similar.

What is powering the rear speakers?

 

Goodness... I haven't seen this thread in over a year.

Fortunately, my setup is still the same.

The rear 6.5" speakers are powered by the head unit.

I have an external pair of 6x9s in the back that sits inside a space by the strut tower bar. These are powered by an external amp rated about 35Wx2. They're strong enough and won't distort since much of the bass is routed to the sub.

There's no DVD player, and no plans for one ever. I've stopped doing much audio installs on this car.

The sub panel is OEM, and can be purchased through www.courtesyparts.com for a little over $6. Other places sell for over $20.

The sub install was a pain and took 3 days... I'll never touch that area ever again, unless the speaker blows (highly doubt it).

There's no real "box" for this sub.

My dad used MDF boards cut to a certain extent so that it could over the huge opening in the compartment. The goal was to seal it as much as possible.

One primary place to watch out is the seatbelt.

Then he created a subwoofer mounting "plate" using an MDF board and cut the opening for the sub to fit. Then it was installed.

Afterwards, I applied over $100 worth of Dynamat Xtreme. I pretty much covered as much as I could since the back end and the "floor" were sheetmetal (thin).

Pretty much the primary goal is to seal things as much as possible including the surrounding areas of the sub.

Why not a 12"

 

I don't think a 12" really is necessary - this is a tiny car and I don't really need to annoy the neighbors or set off car alarms. I am looking for some "thump" added to my music, which doesn't really include bass heavy rap type stuff - that is why i originally was drawn to Skidazzle's setup with the 2 8". I also think this set up is pretty cool:

It's very nice I agree. Just from personal experience I noticed a good sound quality difference going from 10" to 12" and I don't listen to rap either..Larger drivers simply handle a lower freq range better IMO.

 

Skidazzle, how do you like those Boston components up front? I was planning on the Infinity Perfects, but I am hearing that the highs are very harsh with those; because of the construction of the tweeter. Bostons would be my second choice.

I was just looking at your thread again because I came across one in which a lot of people were talking bad about the choice of subwoofer location - as if there were a lot of other options! Anyway, that thread is here:

You're seems to be sealed pretty good - are you still able to get a good rumble? My main other question is about your speaker/amp combo. I was thinking instead of 2 amps, just using one big JL 500/5 amp to power everything. What do you think of that idea? Do you really love your Boston's? How do they compare to the Infiniti Kappas? Those are my two choices...Anyway, thanks so much for any guidance you have time to provide. I will be sure to send you pictures when I am done if you'd like to see them.
