Cool Paint Protection

I'm getting my new z next month sometime and checking out the possibility of having the paint protection put on. It seems really expensive to get it done by the dealer and I'm sure they get a big markup - does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this done cost effectively. Also are all the coatings equivalent to each other or are there some brands superior to others?

Please don't get paint protection. It does nothing and is a real problem if you ever need to touch up scratches or respray a panel.

Just spend a couple of hours every few weeks with a good qaulity wax. The results will be far better.

Yeh, no paint protection please.

Dealer offered me this as well, and it costs hell lot. Still, even without it, my car is shiny as hell.

What exactly is this "paint protection" and how do they apply it?

Think of it as a "coat" to your car's paint, another "layer" for example.

Don't let the dealer sell you paint protection; its just another profit center. Use search and look up what the guys here do.
one key word to look for is "zaino".

You're not supposed to and I don't know anyone who's tried but I suspect you could. You're supposed to use the matching wash and sealant products that go with the paint protection product.

It does nothing. A friend has it on his 3 year old car and it's covered in fine scratches and swirls. Compare that to the paint on the 9 year old car I just sold which has only ever used Meguiars products. My car still had a better than showroom look to it and I'm far from fanatical about car care.

Paint protection waste of money you might as well do this, my last two cars had paint protection it lasts around 6 months at best, then need's to be re-applied. I,ve switch to Zanio Bros products check out www.zainobros.com it's the best product I've ever used, it's easy too apply and boy does it shine, looks great. I had to purchase it from an agent in Singapore it's not available in Aus. PM me if you need the info to get some, belive me it's worth it.

My dealer threw in the Ming Protection Package to close the deal with me. I was ready to close anyway so I saw the protection package as a bonus. It includes paint / leather / rust protection.
After reading this post, I regret getting the paint protection. I will enquire with Ming if it is possible to wax over the paint protection (or remove it altogether) and let you guys who also have paint protection know what their response is.

Yeah that paint protection is a bit of ****.....more suited to squeezing money out of pensioners buying Pulsars. And when u do apply the paint protection, apparently ur not allowed to use ur own polish or wax on top?!?

The leather protection is a good investment. U could do it urself using Meguairs or AutoGlym leather treaters.....say cleaner then conditioner. Id apply it straight away specially if u have black leather, as black always seems to get that ugly shiny look very quickly, the steering wheel especially, and then re-apply occasionally.

ZEXC-33, let me just clarify on paint protection.
My car is silver and I'm happy with the shine at the moment. I would like to compare my paint protected Z with a waxed silver Z to determine if there is any difference in shine. I would regret the paint protection under the following circumstances:
1. A waxed Ag Z is shinnier than mine
2. I cannot wax over the top of the paint protection if 1 is true
3. Need to reapply after 6 months as ZZZ-35 stated.

So judging from all your earlier feedback (as this is the first time I have had paint protection), I regretted having it. But now, as far as I am concerned, the jury is still out on paint protection, until I can compare with a silver waxed Z. Perhaps I will get the opportunity to do this when we have a Sydney meet.

KY350, you won't be disappointed with the shine, it's equal to a good wax. What you need to do is compare it every 6 months and the difference will become noticeable.

I'm not familiar with the Ming product other than having heard of it but I can confirm that some brands do insist you not use a wax (I suspect this may just be a way of getting you to buy their maintenance products instead but can't confirm it) and some do require it be reapplied every 6 to 12 months, albeit at a lower cost than the initial application.

Further some brands actually buff the paint before application to ensure the best shine. Problem here is that the extent of the buffin removes around 40% of the thickness of the paint.

In addition as I stated above you can have colour matching and other problems should you ever need to have a panel touched up or repainted. Probably wouldn't be noticeable on your silver as much as it would on dark colours.

I'm not trying to worry you, if it's looked after the paint protection will look almost as good as wax over time. It's just harder to look after than wax.

import some Zaino or Crystalguard!

I used the Crystalguard maintenance kit on my Z and was shocked at the great results. 4hrs cleaning the car and 20min application.

It is definitly worth a look to get a detailer put on the pro kit. It has many properties that leave a wax for dead. Ie. it's a very strong barrier!

The worst thing about CG is the price!
